LUCIAN

I slept long and deep, possibly the most satisfying sleep I’d ever had in my life. Never before had I felt so content, so at peace. For the first time ever, all the missing holes in my heart seemed filled.

All of it felt like a dream, too surreal to be true. And I would have doubted the whole night had occurred until I rolled over and Katerina’s luscious, warm body was pressed into mine.

I didn’t want to let her out of my sight for fear she might disappear. She could have snuck away in the middle of the night but chose to stay. That had to mean something.

Gazing down at her beautiful face and dark curls lying across my pillow, my inner dragon stirred. Once I’d returned to the wedding for the reception, I’d found a way to stay in control of the beast lurking within.Stay calm. Soon enough.

I’d kept the dragon quiet so Katerina didn’t see that side of me too soon. When Nadia had seen me transform, she’d run away and taken Sarah with her. We’d almost lost both of them that night. Humans weren’t used to seeing any sort of magic, let alone mythical creatures. In her world, I was nothing more than a myth...and a monster.

Upon waking and seeing her there, I relaxed, letting my guard down.

Katerina shifted in her sleep, her lush body moving closer to mine instinctively. The fresh touch ignited a fire in my soul.

It’s her. She’s the one. The other half. I’m complete!

My stomach churned with the immediate change within my body. I tensed up and recited calming words inside my head.

Stay in control. Stay calm. It’s okay to be excited, but I have to be careful. I don’t want to scare her away.

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to focus on the war being waged inside my mind as two instincts fought for dominance.

We’re bonded now. We’re one now!My dragon’s celebration grew as her eyes opened and her gaze fell on my naked chest.

“Morning,” she said, and an adorable blush spread across her cheeks.

“Morning,” I murmured back. “How did you sleep?”

“Wonderfully.” She let out a blissful sounding sigh. “I’ll be honest. I don’t do this kind of thing, like, ever.”

I gazed down at her curiously, unsure how to interpret her statement. “Do what kind of thing, exactly?”

“Fall into bed with someone I just met.” Her voice got awfully quiet. “Totally worth every second.”

A grin spread across my face. “Definitely worth the leap of faith on my part, as well.” If only she knew how much of a leap it was on my end. My dragon stirred at the memory of the satisfaction from becoming one. How much that alone meant...

Calm down!

“I sorry, I didn’t mean to stay all night,” she said. “But I was so tired and so content.”

I frowned. “Why would you leave?”

“Isn’t that how these things work?” she asked.

These things...did she mean a one-night stand? “I wasn’t intending for this to be the only time we—”

Her beautiful eyes grew wide, with excitement or surprise I couldn’t tell. “No?”

“No.”

“That’s a relief, because I was kind of hoping for seconds this morning. Or is that selfish and forward of me to presume?” She placed a hand on my upper thigh, and that’s when I lost all control.

I groaned as my body started to respond to my shifter’s elation. “E-excuse me I...”

I rolled out of the bed and staggered towards the door. I had to leave the room before I shifted in front of her.

When she saw my dragon for the first time, I wanted it to be after I’d explained the world she was now going to be a part of. Throwing her straight into the thick of it would be far too overwhelming.
