Another picture arrived. This time it was one of her in a yellow bikini in front of a lake witha fancy cabin surrounded by thick forest. It was the kind of lake cabin rich folks bought to get away from people, not the kind some average Joe rented for his family.

My eyes scanned her body over and over again as I climbed into my truck and sat down. Her perfect tits were barely covered, the shape of her little slit visible through the fabric. Why would she send me this picture unless she wanted me to go mad over her?

Shit. I was getting hard.

On vacation right now but will be back the day after tomorrow. You should stop by the clinic and let me look at that wound when everybody else is gone. I can also help you with your program as promised.

I stared at the screen. At those words:When everybody else is gone...

By now, I had the clinic’s employee schedule. Her shift started at eight, but what she was referring to was the fact that after 10:00 p.m., she’d be the only one left on the emergency night shift at the clinic.

For a moment, I just sat there, staring at her bright smile in that gorgeous picture. The sun was highlighting her angelic face. How could I possibly say no to that invitation? How?

I’ll tell you how. She’s your lead in the biggest job of your career, and all you want to do is claim her. You’re gonna ruin everything and hurt a sweet girl that’s too good for you anyway.

“Damn it!” I slammed my fist into the steering wheel. I’d never felt anything like this about any woman before. She was the forbidden fruit that I somehow had to harvest without touching. But how in the name of God was I supposed to do that?

My hands were squeezing the phone so tightly I was surprised it didn’t crack. Biting my lip hard, I started to type what I knew was the right thing for everybody here.

I’m sorry but I can’t,my evening shift ends at nine.

It hurt typing it; like someone had punched me in the gut. Hating everything about it, I reread the message. My finger was on the send button when another text came in.

“God, that sounded weird. LOL. I promised to help you with the program. I have much more time when the others aren’t asking me to do things for them. That’s why nights are best.”

Damn it.

I hit the steering wheel once more. The universe was turning against me. Why was it trying so hard to make me slip? I’d just been about to do the right thing. Dark forces were clearly working against me. If she was really too busy to hang with me when coworkers were around, it would be hard for me to get close enough to get the information I needed.

I deleted my earlier message and went back and forth, good versus evil, typing multiple drafts until I finally decided.

I’ll bring coffee and some homegrown blueberries. If the neighbor’s kids didn’t eat them all again.??

Hating myself more than ever, I then did an even more despicable thing: my job. I grabbed the old flip phone and took pictures of the chat, including the images of the lake cabin, then texted them to my chief.

Where is this?was all I texted him. Just three words, three simple words.

I felt like I’d betrayed her.
