Chapter 7

6a.m. The rainy spot.

It was barely light out when I received the text from the chief. I was still lying on the couch, watching mindless TV shows with Thor, unable to even get an hour of sleep without seeing Mila in my dreams. I had brushed my teeth three times but could taste her sweet wetness on my lips and tongue—it was driving me nuts!

I hopped into the shower and soaped myself, except for my cock, which I’d simply let the shower take care of. I was afraid that even soaping it would get it hard again. Then I fed Thor, gave him a good rub, and headed out to the rainy spot.

It was one of those summer thunderstorm days again in Boston. Rain was drumming heavily on the roofs and streets of the city. The air had that fresh smell to it. Gray, thick clouds swallowed the daylight as if it was still night.

The chief was already standing beneath the metal framework of a high-rise building under construction. It was abandoned since work couldn’t take place during storms.

Raising a brow, he looked at me and dried his face with a handkerchief.

“You look worse every time I see you. Didn’t they put a bed in your apartment?”

I ignored him, too tired to give him shit. “What you got for me?” I asked.

He pulled a piece of paper out of his soaked coat.

“We found the lake house. It’s on private property in New Hampshire.”

Wiping my hands dry on my pants, I grabbed the paper. “That’s good news.”

His brows knitted. “Yes and no. We can have the place bugged while Eagle is in town if you can get us something a little more solid. The judge won’t grant our request based on what we have so far.”

That was understandable. So far, we barely had anything to take to a judge, let alone something we could use to sell the case to the FBI.

“What were you thinking?” I asked.

He shrugged. “You got nothing new from the girl?”

She’s a virgin who wants me bad.

I shook my head.

“That vacation she took, is that a regular thing?”

I’d wondered about that myself. I’d meant to ask Mila, but...well, I’d been buried too deep between her legs to get to that.

My expression hardened. God, I wanted that warmth again. “You think she goes with her brother when he takes jobs out of town?” I wondered.

“Maybe. It’s possible he wants her close to keep her safe. Andrei took on a fatherly role, and every father I know doesn’t stop worrying about his kid when they turn eighteen. It’s the opposite. We worry more when they’re not around. And in his line of business, he has plenty of enemies. If we can establish her travel routes and match them with the assassinations, we’ll have something we can work with.”

It would be a start, but we needed more, and we both knew it.

“We need to take this a step further, am I hearing this right?” I asked.

The chief scratched his chin. “You need to get the location of their next destination. Not just the town, but where they’ll stay. The FBI could get a search warrant.”

I imagined getting our hands on the rifles, the files, and the pictures of Eagle’s targets. “The evidence we’d need to nail his coffin shut.”

“Shut for a long time.”

I kept my cool on the outside, but inside, I was raging like the storm all around us. As if in response, a flash of lightning lit the sky, followed by the rumbling sound of thunder. “That won’t be easy,” I said. “I don’t think Mila’s helping her brother in any way, but I’m pretty sure she knows he’s not working a nine-to-five at the bank. She won’t just give him up like that. She’s too smart.”

I turned away from the chief, my eyes staring out at the muddy construction site. It should have been simple to get this info from her, and yet, it was almost impossible after what had happened last night. She wasn’t stupid enough to share her location with a friend to come over and have coffee at the hotel. Normal people didn’t text their friends things like, “Hey, I’m in a hotel in New York, wanna fly over and have coffee?” No, as her friend that wouldn’t happen. Not without Eagle growing suspicious. I would have to be her boyfriend to get exact details on her hotel locations.

“Chief,” I said in the soft tone of a confession as my gaze turned heavenwards. “There is something I need to tell you.”
