“Me neither.”

She slapped my naked butt playfully.

“Yeah, right. I’m sure you do this all the time.”

“No,” I said, lifting myself onto my elbows to look at her. “Granted, I’ve done this once or twice before, but it’s never felt like this.”

Her beautiful eyes filled with tears as she held my gaze. She was looking for the truth of my words and must have found it because she suddenly smiled.

“I’m so happy, Noah. Thank you.”

Thank you?

I ran my hand over her hot cheek and smiled back at her. “For what? Granting me the greatest pleasure I’ve ever felt in my life?”

She slapped my butt again, this time laughing. “Noah Davis, you’re ridiculous.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine, killing the mood. Noah...Davis.That’s not who I was. The cold reality of the situation grabbed me from the land of dreams and pulled me right back to the horror called reality.

“Did I say something wrong?”

I shook my head, faking a smile. “No, baby.”

It’s just that I’m lying to you to get to your brother. I’m a terrible human being. How did I think I could keep this up? The guilt was eating away at me. I had to tell her the truth. Which, of course, would ruin the investigation, our relationship, and let everybody down at the station—a lose-lose-lose.

I had to get this investigation over with. Then I would fall on my knees and beg for forgiveness. Promise that I really cared about her, that I’d never felt anything like this for any woman before. Maybe she could find it in her heart to forgive me. She was a logical woman. Maybe she’d understand that what her brother was doing wasn’t right. That I had to do my job—my duty to society.

“So...” I carefully searched for the right words to move this—to moveus—closer to the day of truth. “What exactly did you guys fight about?”

Her blue eyes fell to the floor. “I really don’t want to burden you with any of this.”

I remained silent for a moment. “If it really involves me, I think I’d like to know. Only if that’s okay, though.”

She bit her lower lip. “He...well...he’s very protective, you know. He’s all the family I’ve ever known, and he did what he could, considering who he is.”

And who is that? A killer? “What do you mean?”

She pushed herself up to a sitting position. I did the same so I could keep her in my arms. I wasn’t ready to lose the wonderful warmth of her body.

“He’s not an easy man to live with. He’s had some rough patches in life, and he didn’t exactly cope with therapists—or the idea of turning the other cheek.”

Did she know who he really was?

“People do what they can,” I said as her eyes seemed to grow a shade darker. She rested her head on my shoulder. Her soft hairs tickled my neck.

“Andrei is different. I can’t tell you how, but he just is. He’s not a bad brother, but he has his certain ways.”

“And one of them is keeping guys like me away from you?”

“Keeping any guy away from me when he’s around—which is always.”

“Always?”

“He takes me on his business trips with him. He has one coming up soon.”

I tried not to tense at this information. This was it: one of the key pieces of info I needed for the investigation. But now that I was finally about to get it, all I felt was terrible.

“So the fight happened after you told him about me?” I asked.
