“Matter to you,” I cut him off in annoyance. “I got that.”

The man smirked at me then turned his car back on.

“Good luck,” he said, then drove off down the dirt road ahead of me.

My eyes wandered to the little path he’d motioned toward.Now what?I thought.

If Andrei wanted you dead, you’d already be dead.

Besides, what else was I going to do? If this meant I could see her one more time, even if she just wanted to curse at me some more, there was nothing that could stop me.

For weeks I’d tried calling her. I’d gone to her house, even to the lake cabin. Nothing. She wasn’t anywhere to be found.

This was the only real chance I had at seeing her again—so by God, I’d take it no matter the cost.
