“They...” I pointed at my name tag. “They messed up and put my middle name on it. John.”

Her lips curled into a look of sympathy. “I know how that feels. They get my last name wrong all the time. Well, anyway, I gotta go. I guess I’ll see you soon?”

“Yup. I’ll be around quite a bit from now on.”

She nodded, turned away, but then stopped and looked at me once more. “And don’t worry,” she said.

“Worry?” I asked.

“Earlier you said Thor will lose his most prized possession.”

“Ah yes. His manhood.”

“Yes. So don’t worry. He won’t lose that.”

“So you won’t neuter him?”

She shook her head. “We’ll have to neuter him. But his manhood isn’t his most prized possession, so he’ll be fine.”

Then she turned and walked toward the entrance of the vet’s office. Just like that. One moment here in my truck with me, the next gone. I watched her every move like a tiger stalking its prey. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. The wind played with the brown strands that had fallen out of her bun with every step she took. She was halfway through the entrance door when she stopped and turned back. It was a quick gaze with a faint smile, barely enough to notice, but it was all I needed to lean back into my seat, oddly relieved.

Staring at the vet’s entrance door, I sat in my truck, deep in thought. This woman. There was something about this woman that made me lose my cool. Maybe I was just nervous about the operation itself. Catching Eagle was a big deal. And as things stood right now, that little cat-whisperer was the only chance I had to make it happen.

Yes, that was most likely it—adrenaline seeping in from the high stakes at play here. Somewhat at ease to finally have an explanation for my odd behavior, I turned the keys to my truck. I was feeling better. First contact hadn’t been a total disaster. She’d taken to me without suspicion. And that was a damn good start. More than I could’ve hoped for. Now all I needed to do was get close to her. My hands felt clammy as I gripped the steering wheel and pulled out onto the street.
