Epilogue

Iopened my eyes to the turquoise waters, glittering in front of me as if a million stars had fallen from the skies. I was listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves as they crushed over the white sand.

I closed my eyes again and rolled over on the beach-front chaise. Mila was lying right next to me in that sexy yellow bikini of hers. She slowly opened her eyes and let out a deeply satisfied moan.

“Cocktail?” I asked as I leaned over to kiss her softly on her tanned shoulder.

“Of course,” she said, smiling.

I sat up and waved at the waiter at the beach bar. He nodded and held a finger up to signal he’d be over in a minute.

My eyes looked over the vast sea, taking it all in, thanking whatever mighty power might be out there for this beautiful life.

Mila sat up and pushed her veterinary final exam book off her chest. She’d delayed her finals for a few semesters to heal from losing Andrei and to travel with me—and to move into my place. She still kept the mansion for Andrei, but we both agreed that her place was with me now, in that outdated house of mine that she slowly updated into something she called “modern farmhouse style.” I loved how she made it a home again, a true place for a family.

We’d heard nothing from Andrei ever since that rainy day in the woods. She seemed somewhat at peace with that, and so was I. He was free, and since none of the Kowitsch finances had been frozen, and there was only a warrant for questioning out for him, I didn’t think he was necessarily suffering.

I was still a cop as the whole mission was a secret unknown to most except for a few powerful people still hunting Andrei in the shadows. And although the promised funding for my station never came through from those corrupt politicians, an anonymous check for millions did. Mila and I knew who it was from.

“Your mother was right,” Mila said, grabbing her blue cocktail from the waiter. “This is the most amazing place in the world.”

I grabbed my cocktail and leaned over to kiss her. Her words meant so much to me, and in a strange way, it felt like my mother was watching from wherever she was, smiling, happy for me.

“Maybe, but I’d love a Boston blizzard as long as it was with you.”

And there it was...that laugh I loved so much. The laugh I’d hopefully get to hear for the rest of my life, if she’d do me the honor tonight and sayyesto the ring, yesto being with my ass every day for eternity, and maybe evenyesto having little feet stomping through the house somewhere down the road.

And the way her beautiful eyes were looking at me, I had no doubt that tonight she’d make me the luckiest and happiest man alive.
