“He informed me that some noble families believe the rebels are behind my father’s death. That they would welcome an alliance with King Algar to make the rebels pay.”

“That snake,” Wimfred spat.

“If he is right, then an alliance with any nobleman from the North is out of the question.” Dieter scratched his chin. “We can’t risk Gunther gaining even more popularity by making mistakes that will turn more people against you.”

Alrick? A mistake?

“We don’t know that for certain,” I disagreed. “I know King Algar most likely killed my father. Either with the help of Gunther or maybe even just by himself. Something isn’t right with these two. The timing of Gunther siding with King Algar is too convenient, if you ask me. Especially considering that Algar has played no part in the Southern kingdom whatsoever up until now.”

“I agree with the queen,” Wimfred said, “but I think Dieter is right to suggest turning down any alliances with a rebel nobleman. For now.”

No! No! No!

For weeks I had been pining for Alrick, and now that I might finally see him again soon, I was supposed to just let him go?

“There must be another way. If I don’t align with the rebels, I have nobody but enemies in the North. And I can’t just forgive King Algar for what he has done.”

Wimfred’s face twisted in pain. “God be my witness, he will pay. But Gunther has played his cards well. No matter what we do now, it’s an uphill battle.”

I balled my fists. How could things continue to get worse and worse? Now that Gunther was blaming the rebels for my father’s death, would Alrick even still come to my crowning ceremony? I pushed the thought out of my head before it broke me.

“A war has many battles,” I said. “Let’s show Gunther that this one was just the beginning.”
