“Wait here,” the boy said once he saw that everybody was inside. He turned toward the door close to him.

I pushed through the group of rebels.

“Wait,” I demanded, but as soon as the boy realized I was after him, he jumped through the open door, and it slammed shut.

“The door!” I shouted and twirled around toward the door we had entered, but the moment two of the rebels ran toward it, it was slammed closed as well.

“Damn it!” I cursed, grabbing the handle of the heavy wood door the boy had escaped through. I tore, shook, and even threw myself against the wood, but it didn’t move an inch.

“They are metal plated on the outside,” Lord Grundig, one of our oldest, said. “Every single one of them down here is. I noticed it as we passed.”

“Damn Leki and her evil dwarfs,” Lord Buschnick cursed.

“Leki has nothing to do with this,” Lord Otter countered. “Alrick von Wilbrandt does. This is all his fault. The Night Queen called us here to ridicule us once more.”

I sighed after trying another desperate throw against the door. My shoulder ached from the impact.

“Stop bickering like a market wife, Otter, and help me find a way out of here. If we don’t make it to the reception, the whole world will take it as a sign that the Rhine Queen disapproves of us and thinks we killed her father. Then all was for nothing.”

The men mumbled in agreement as Lord Otter crossed his arms and puffed his cheeks like a pouting child.

“And for those with swords, be ready in case we’re attacked,” I added.

“I only brought a silver dagger,” Otter complained.

“Then use that,” I said, annoyed. “Or die pouting like a child,” I mumbled to myself.
