King Louis approached me and stretched out his arm. “Will you do me the honor of this dance?”

My head jerked toward Algar, who was now staring at the doors where Rune was—orhad been. He was gone now.

“My Queen?” Louis said.

Faking a smile, I placed my hand on his arm. “It would be an honor,” I lied, wishing this horrific day would finally come to an end. The rebels were here; so was Rune. I needed to get them to make peace somehow in order to take the wind out of King Algar’s sails—or his army’s, in this case.

Then I only had to dethrone Gunther by supplanting him with gold in His Holiness’s pockets and then uncover King Algar’s murder using the ever-sleep poison.

My stomach twisted and turned under the enormous weight of it all. And as King Louis gently placed his hand on my back and led me to the dance floor, another threat dawned on me.

This man wasn’t just here to honor my crowning—this man was here for my kingdom. And what easier way to it than—surprise, surprise—marriage!
