“We...can’t,” I said. How could two little words hurt so much?

“Of course we can,” she insisted. There was frustration and hurt in her voice.

My hand ran through my hair. “Mina, just think about what’s at risk here. If you marry another, it’s not my place...” My voice broke off. I really wasn’t able to finish this sentence. Mentally. Physically.

This time, she didn’t protest, nor disagree. Instead, she grabbed my hand and gently squeezed it before letting go again.

“I shall see you tomorrow?” she asked.

“Of course you will. I won't leave your side until...” Until what, Alrick? “I...I won’t leave it.”

For a few moments longer, she stared at me in the dark, then lowered her head.

“Soon, my side won’t be your place anymore” was all she said before she turned and left.

My feet moved after her as if my body was not my own. For a moment, I thought I would grab her and run away with her, leave it all behind. But just as I took another step, I stopped in the middle of the path.

What I wouldn’t give to be with her,I had said earlier to myself. And as much as it hurt, as much as I prayed to the gods to find a way to let us be together again, two kingdoms and Mina’s life were not a price I was willing to pay.

In utter shock and frustration, I watched her go.

“I love you,” I hollered after her. I could see her shadow in the distance stop for a moment, but then she turned the corner and was gone—and although I would see her beautiful face again tomorrow, in some ways, she was lost to me forever.
