“I love you, too.”

For a while, we lie peacefully in each other’s arms, listening to the sound of the wind blowing through the trees. My heart is filled with love.I’ve never felt so good.

“You make me so happy,” he sighs, stroking my hair. “When I’m with you, I hold the whole world in my embrace.”

“Oh Nick, you’re so romantic.”

“But it’s true.

“How much do you love me?”

“So much.”

“Really and truly?”

“You know I’d do anything for you.”

“Anything?”

“That’s what I said.”

He hesitates, mulling this over. Then he kisses my forehead. “I’ve waited so long to find you, Carly. I’m completely obsessed with you and I’m never letting you go,ever.” He pauses again, and I sense there’s something on his mind.

“Darling, what’s wrong?” I probe.

“It’s nothing.”

“Don’t give me that. I know every inch of you, and something’s wrong, I can feel it.”

“No, really, I’m fine.”

“No you’re not. Talk to me. Tell me what’s on your mind.”

Nick’s breathing grows shallow and his muscles tense. “I have a confession to make,” he whispers.

“What is it?”

He swallows hard and licks his lips. “I don’t quite know how to say this.”

“Just say it.”

He hesitates. Fear grips me and refuses to let go. “Please just say it, Nick. Don’t keep me in suspense.”

A minute passes before he’s ready to talk. Gently, he grips hold of my hand and says, “I haven’t been completely honest with you. You said we shouldn’t keep secrets from each other, so…the truth is, I know who killed Jessica.”

My eyes widen with horror. “Oh my God…”

“Veda did it.”

“Your wife?”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

Tears fall slowly down his cheeks. “Because she’s evil, Carly. Her own life was destroyed so she cannot bear to ever see anyone else happy. She murdered Jessica because she resented the bond Jessica had with her daughter, Molly. And it kills me, Carly, because I feel responsible. I feel like I could have prevented it. I should never have allowed Veda to get as strong as she’s become. But I didn’t ever confront her behaviour because I felt so guilty about the past we share. After all, I was the one who made Veda the monster she is. So many times over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to put her out of her misery. I could have driven a stake through her heart long ago and protected humanity from her evil. But I never laid a finger on Veda because I didn’t want to go back on the promise I made to my darling Coppélia all those years ago, never to harm her mother.”

“You can’t blame yourself,” I whisper, squeezing his hand reassuringly. “You are as much of a victim as Veda, except that you choose to do good with your life. You didn’t ask to become a vampire. It was a cruel card life dealt you. You were in an impossible situation and you simply cannot hold yourself responsible for the wicked path Veda has chosen to take.”
