She laughed fully then, shaking her head.“That’s not true.”

“Oh, it’s true.”

She tucked her dark hair behind her ear, revealing a large gold hoop earring. She had everything together from head to toe, and Harrison did feel completely out of his league in that moment.

“What do you turn to when your friends are driving you insane?”she asked.

“Cheeseburgers,” he said.“Chocolate-covered pretzels.”He grinned.“I have a full shelf in my pantry filled with chocolate-covered pretzels.”

“Wow,” she said.“Scandalous.”

He laughed.“If you try to take some, I’ll know.I have the bags numbered.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”She crossed her legs, and Harrison dang near drove them off the road.“Favorite beverage?”

“Am I driving or not driving?”

“You’re driving,” she said.“You have to go to work or out dancing with your girlfriend.”She gave him a look filled with flirtatiousness, but panic struck Harrison right between the ribs.

“I don’t dance,” he said.“But if I had to take my girlfriend fishing or to the movies, I’d drink Diet Dr.Pepper.”

“Fishing?”Cass sounded horrified.“Do I look like a woman who’d like fishing?”

“Yes,” he said without hesitation.“You look like a woman who hasn’t given fishing a chance, and if she would, she’d like it.”He grinned at her.“I’ll bring all the peach iced tea, boiled peanuts, and chocolate-covered pretzels.”

She laughed now too, and Harrison reached over and took her hand in his.He drew it all the way to his lips and kissed the back of it as she quieted.“So.”He cleared his throat.“Are you my girlfriend?”

“I…don’t know,” Cass said.“Am I?”

“I’m not seeing anyone else,” he said.He wanted to look at her, but he had to drop her hand and keep his eyes on the road as he went around a curve at a speed that was a little too fast.He applied the brakes and prayed he wouldn’t whiplash her around.

“I’m obviously not either,” Cass said.

Harrison swallowed, but his throat was so dry, the walls of it stuck together slightly.“This is only our second date,” he said.“Maybe you’ll decide you’re out of my league by the end of the hour.”

“I doubt it.”

“Maybe you won’t like any of the things I do.”He looked at her now.“Like fishing or movies.”

“I adore movies.I could be persuaded to try fishing.”She shook her hair over her shoulder as if puffing herself up, prepping to do the dreaded fishing.

“I won’t make you bait the hook,” he promised.

She grinned at him.“Deal.”

“Maybe I won’t be a good kisser.”Harrison shrugged one shoulder like he really might not be able to land a kiss.He knew with a woman like Cass, it would have to be the most amazing kiss of her life. She wanted—and probably got—the best of everything.

Harrison suddenly needed to know more about her husband. How could he ever compare to West?

You don’t need to, he told himself, but it wasn’t in a very convincing voice.

“Maybe you won’t be,” she said in a non-committal tone.

Harrison wanted to defend himself.“I guess we’ll find out.”

“Will we?”she teased.

“Eventually,” he said, not wanting to imply that he’d be kissing her immediately or anything. He’d been thinking about it, of course, but he could control himself. For a while.
