“Come on, I think I might know where they went.”

By this point, our hands hadn’t come unlocked at all, so I continued to pull Whitney past the staircase that led to the cellar and towards the staff office.

I swung the door open to find my boss and the woman who would always be a mother figure to me engaged in a very heavy make-out session.

“My eyes,” I cried, covering them just as Whitney said, “Holy shit. Good for you, Barb.”

The chief and Barb jumped back from each other like they were two teenagers behind the bleachers.

“Is it safe to look?” I asked, my eyes still shielded.

Barb chuckled. “It’s safe, Jack.”

I moved my arm. “Oh, thank God for that.”

All three of them glared at me.

Whitney tried to step forward, but then remembered that we were still tangled together. “Sorry about that, Barb, but the ceremony is about to start, and we really need you to get downstairs.”

“Oh, my goodness.” She straightened out her dress and then pulled out lipstick from the purse that had been discarded on the desk.

The chief adjusted his clothing before walking towards me, looking severe. “I assume you will use your discretion.”

“Of course, sir.”

“You’re a good kid, Jack.” He patted my shoulder and left the room, his wife right behind him.

When they exited, I closed the door behind them and engaged the lock.

“What are you doing?”

I planted my hands firmly on her flared hips. “Getting you alone.”

I closed the remaining space between us, pushing her flush against the door.

“You have a thing for doors.”

I slowly brought my face to hers. “No, I only have a thing for you against doors.” I used my leg to spread hers.

She released a breathy moan that drove me wild.

Then Whitney pinned me with a look. “You think you can trap me here after the bus stunt and all will be forgiven?”

Chapter 33

Whitney

While my bodyhad been on autopilot during the gala, my mind raced with thoughts of Jack.

He bared his soul to me on the bus ride over. I believed he told me the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

If only it had been someone else in our graduating class.

Anyonebesides Katie Kooney. I wouldn’t have felt so gutted by the revelation. I’d pass it off as him trying to make a life for himself. Hell, I tried to do the same in LA. Sure, my dating life had been nothing short of disastrous, but still, it wasn’t like I had remained celibate in the hopes that we would once again be together.

It stung, and my head and my heart were, it seemed, at war. Fortunately, for the first time in a few days, I had hope that my heart would win.

I fruitlessly pushed against Jack’s chest, trying to resist his advance but the familiar smell of pine overrode my good senses.
