Finally, we made it upstairs to Coach’s bedroom. “And this is where the magic happens.” He displayed the room as if he were Vanna White. I gave an obligatory chuckle, daring to roll my eyes only when I was sure he wasn’t looking my way.

His bathroom connected to his bedroom via a barn door slider. Damn, I did love a barn door slider.

This was my shot.

I twirled my hair as Coach showed off his memorabilia from when he played college ball. The room screamed bachelor pad, and not in a good way. It was the antithesis of Jack’s bedroom, which actually made you want to spend time in the masculine space.

This room just made me a little sad. The guy clearly peaked in high school and college and tried to relive his glory days by surrounding himself with mementos from his time as a player.

Even the bed depressed me. It only had one pillow. Clearly, he didn’t get much company because most women liked to have a pillow to themselves. At leastone pillow.

But I didn’t plan on any overnight visits, so it didn’t really matter that much. If I wasn’t here to see if the guy was trying to dope up his players, I’d give him some relationship advice.

I opted for false flattery instead. “This house is beautiful. I’m definitely going to have to tell my real estate agent to find me some house options nearby.” I bit my bottom lip. “Actually, now that I see the bathroom, I kind of have to go again.”

I winced, feigning embarrassment. But didn’t wait for him to give me permission, I stormed into the bathroom. Right before I closed the doors, I called out to him, “I’ll meet you downstairs when I’m done.” I flashed him a quick smile, then leaned my forehead against the closed door.

This time, I knew exactly what I needed to do. I went immediately to the medicine cabinet to check there first.

I opened the mirrored door and the first thing I found was a box of condoms.

“Ew, gross.” Avoiding the box, I dug around more, moving some bottles and grooming products that got in my way.

“What did you stumble on, Sprinkles?”

I jumped again. “You really need to keep breathing in my ear, or something to let me know you are still on the line. This popping in and out is distracting.”

The cabinet search revealed nothing. Rubbing my forehead, I looked around the room to see what other hiding places Coach might have. Again, another set of cabinets filled with linens and toilet paper proved empty of anything nefarious.

As a last whim, I looked under the sink and in the vanity drawers. One wouldn’t budge.

“Ah, ha.” I tried pulling harder and when that didn’t work, I looked around for something that could give me a little leverage.

Jack’s excited voice flitted into my ear. “Did you find something?”

I sighed. “I’m not sure yet, but I do have a drawer that won’t open. There doesn’t seem to be a lock, so I’m not sure why it won’t move.” I pulled out the cabinet drawer on top of it, all the way out and set it on the ground, silently praying that I’d be able to put it back in.

As I suspected, nothing divided the space between the drawers, so I stuck my hand in and searched the locked drawer.

My fingertips felt a plastic bottle with lots of pills in it. A person doesn’t go to such lengths to hide Advil if you know what I’m saying.

“Oh, no.” Despite feeling in my gut that Jeremy’s claims were true, a part of me didn’t want to think that an adult responsible for the health and wellbeing of two dozen high school students could do anything to intentionally hurt them.

Jack’s serious voice sounded again. “What did you find?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose with my free hand. “It’s not good, Jack. I think I found them. I think I found the steroids.”

Jack asked me to read the label on the glass jar, then asked a few other questions.

“I wish I had brought my phone so I could snap a few photos.” I got to work replacing the drawer I had taken out.

Jack reassured me. “Don’t be. We couldn’t have done anything legal with those photos anyway.”

Feeling a little helpless, I peered around the room to make sure everything was back in its place.

A knock on the door gave me a fright.

“What’s taking you so long?” Coach Ramstrom asked.
