The accident probably didn’t help.

Maybe I should have gone and seen a doctor after all.

Savannah began scooping something from the stove onto two plates that she had prepped on the counter.

“Why don’t you wash your hands, and we can get started,” Savannah said, nodding to the farmhouse sink to her right.

“It smells delicious, Savannah. I’m freaking starving.” I ventured over to the sink to do as she asked and then raided the fridge to see what she had in stock.

“I made sure to get sparkling water for you. I know you can’t go without it.” She came over and bumped me in the side as I rolled my eyes.

“At least it’s a healthy addiction.” I smiled as the can hissed open.

That, and Jack’s deep, gravelly voice. It had changed in tenor ever so slightly over the past ten years, but it still had the ability to send shivers down my spine.

“So…spill the beans, why was Jack Montgomery serving as your own personal ride-share driver?” Savannah carried our plates to the small round dining table in the middle of the kitchen, so I followed her and took a seat.

“Funny story, that…” I started to explain, but then she connected the dots.

“Wait, where’s your car, Whitney Rose?” I wanted to laugh because she sounded like a mother already. I told her as much.

“You sound like a mom.”

Savannah reached for her belly. Newly pregnant, there wasn’t much of anything to wrap her hands around, but still she touched her lower abdomen with care.

Then Savannah snapped back to reality and wagged a finger at me. “Don’t you dare change the subject.”

I rolled my eyes. Immature? Sure. But that’s what happened when you put the two of us together.

“Fiiine.” I played with the little aluminum pop top, avoiding her eyes. “I may have gotten into a little accident on my way into town.”

Snap. The pull-top broke off, so I set it neatly down beside my plate.

“Whitney.”

I lifted my gaze and blew out air. “Technically, I was in town, so that’s how Jack was able to get to the scene so quickly.”

“If it had been just a tiny accident, you’d still be able to drive your car.”

I nodded slowly. “That’s true. But my entire back end is caved in, so the car wasn’t exactly operational. Plus, the airbags deployed and made a complete mess of things. I couldn’t drive it if I wanted to.”

Savannah’s jaw dropped. “What do you mean, the airbags deployed?” She used her scary quiet voice.

I made an X with my arms. “Don’t do that voice. I don’t like that voice.”

She pointed at me. “Then stop stalling.”

Shrugging, I downplayed it. “So, the crash was a little worse than I made it out to be. That’s not the worst part of this story.”

Moving to the edge of her seat, Savannah asked the question. “What’s the worst part of this story?”

I closed my eyes and pinched my brow. “It was Mother. She’s the one who hit me.” I opened my eyes to look at my sister. With a deadbeat baby daddy and an unreliable mother, Savannah needed support and love and a stable environment. She didn’t need me piling on this crap.

Savannah scoffed, throwing her fork onto her plate. “Of course, it was her. You barely get into town, and she has to go and fuck things up.” Savannah pushed back her chair quickly and began to pace the small kitchen.

“Language,” I said, raising my eyebrows and staring at her stomach.

Savannah looked at me like I was an alien. “You just said the F word a minute ago.” She pointed at me accusingly.
