“Why don’t you follow me into town, and we can stop by Coffee Creek before you start your errands?” he asked, glancing at his watch. “Then I can give you some ideas on which businesses to approach for the sponsoring rides. I can make a couple of calls, too. There are a few people who might be more receptive to hearing from their star quarterback.”

“Sounds perfect.”

We snagged Coffee Creek’s last table. I claimed our seats while Jack placed our orders. Heaving my binder onto the table, I pulled to the tab that had my most updated checklist of to-do items. The next couple of weeks were going to be exhausting, but in a good way. I thrived off the chaos that came with pulling an event together.

Beyonce started blaring announcing an incoming call from Savannah.

“Hey, Sav. What’s going on?”

I hadn’t seen her this morning. We were like passing ships somehow, but we texted constantly.

Savannah sounded out of breath. “Whit, I forgot to tell you I have a prenatal appointment this afternoon. Can you come with me?Please?” she begged.

My day had been packed to the gills, but this I wouldn’t miss. “What time is it?” I opened up the calendar app on my phone and put her on speaker.

“It’s at four. Right after I get off work.”

The same time that I was trying to meet with Katie, but I hadn’t heard back from her. I’d leave her a message and let her know the time didn’t work for me anymore.

“Text me the address and I’ll be there.” I’d still have plenty of time before my planned check in with Barb about the gala proceedings.

A relieved sigh sounded from the other end of the line. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” She promised to text the address as soon as we hung up.

Jack set down our drinks, then pulled the chair situated across from me closer and closer, so that our bodies were touching when he sat down.

“Can’t get enough of me?” I teased.

He looked me straight on and said with all honesty, “No.”

I leaned in close and kissed him slowly on the cheek. “Good.”

He pulled me onto his lap so I could feel what I was doing to him. The man had to have at least eight inches working for him. I moaned quietly into his neck, frustrated that we hadn’t taken things further yet.

“I wish I could take you back to my place. Let’s play hooky and make up for lost time.”

Scrambling out of his arms, I planted my ass in my own chair, trying to keep myself from climbing him like a tree and taking him up on his offer.

“You’re no fun,” he said.

“And you are trying to tempt me.” I wagged a playful finger at him. “I’m going to tell Barbara on you.”

He released a loud laugh. “You would never.”

“Wouldn’t I?” I begged to differ.

“In this situation, telling on me would also mean telling on you. And you know how Barbara will react to finding out about us.”

I considered it. “That’s true. We don’t need that kind of drama.” I ran a hand over the to-do list in front of me. “Now let me get back to work.” When Jack reached for me again, I whacked him with my pen.

“Ouch. Fine.”

“What were those businesses you wanted to suggest?” And just like that Jack jumped into business mode. I appreciated his professionalism.

As Jack relayed the names of the businesses I should visit, he found little ways of touching me. Grazing my thigh with his, his fingers toying with mine, little things that were more distracting than anything. This time I let him.

Finally, I turned to him. “Don’t you have to go to work now?”

He looked at his watch. “Shit.” He stood up abruptly, kissed me and said goodbye, quickly walking away forgetting his coffee.
