Just like his twin, he called her pretty, but she was sure they were just being friendly.

“Goodnight, Gabriel.”

After saying goodnight to the other guys, she turned on her side and rested her head on her arm. She already felt something itching her leg, but she ignored it.

She didn’t have to look up to know that Jack walked up behind her in silence. It was awfully confusing how in tune she felt with this stranger. As he sat down a few feet away from her, she deliberated if she should turn around and face him.

It didn’t take her five minutes to give into the urge to watch him again. She turned on her other side and instantly felt her cheeks warm as he softly smiled at her. It was like he knew she would seek him out without being cocky about it.

She couldn’t believe she felt this attracted to a guy she just met on her first night on the island. A night without Raven, Liv and Hailey. She wondered if her friends had a warm fire to warm up to. And if they were together.

Adela closed her eyes and prayed for their safe return. When she was done praying, she felt a finger wiping away the tear that trickled down her cheek.

Jack.

She sighed but didn’t open her eyes.

“It’s going to be okay. I promise,” he whispered.

“You don’t know that.”

She heard him shift beside her in the sand.

“Open your eyes.”

She had no idea why she complied, but she did.

He mirrored her as he lay on his side in the sand, their faces close enough she could spot dark specks in his green eyes.

“We’re all here for you and Camilla. We’ve got your back—I’vegot your back.”

“But why? You don’t even know me.”

“You know why…”

She did. For some stupid reason, she already knew why he was dead set in helping her, comforting her and laying next to her. Because without really knowing him, she would have done the same for him.

“Will you stay with me tomorrow?”

“Of course. I’ll be right by your side when we find them.”

He couldn’t promise her stuff like that, but she felt weirdly comforted by his words.

“Thanks.”

“No problem. Try to get some sleep, gorgeous.”

“Okay.”

She closed her eyes and listened to the other guys talking around the fire. Camilla and Dominic still hadn’t come back. She wondered what those two were up to.

She heard Jack’s breathing even out. She tried to sneak a stealthy peek through her lashes. Her heart got stuck in her throat when he'd been watching her closely.

“Hey…” he said.

“Hi…”

“You’re awake…”
