She smiled. “So are you…”

“Apparently, I’m quite a feast for the sand fleas.”

She giggled and quickly covered her mouth with her hand.

“Don’t do that. I love hearing you laugh.”

She smiled. “You’re such a melt.”

“A what?”

“A melt? You know: a softy.”

A show-stopping smile broke out on his face before he leaned in, making her heart race in her chest.

His warm breath tickled her skin when he whispered against her ear, “It’s funny you’d say that, since I’ve never been this hard in my life.”

She couldn’t believe he’d actually said that.

“Jack…” she whispered, unsure if she wanted him to stop flirting or start kissing her. A growing part inside of her wondered what it would be like if they were alone on this beach and she’d let him kiss her.

But they were not alone.

“I’ll let you sleep now.”

He kissed the spot behind her ear, setting her on fire with just one little sweep of his tongue. Her physical reaction to Jack unnerved her. The moment he pulled away, she turned on her other side, needing some distance.

“Goodnight,” she whispered into the dark.

“Goodnight, gorgeous…”

It took her a long time to fall asleep.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Instead of wakingup with a certain gorgeous brunette in his arms, surrounded by a warm glow of the first sunrays of the day, Jack opened his eyes to dark clouds, a chilling wind and Adela standing with Gabriel five hundred feet away where the shore turned rocky.

He scratched at a few red bites on his calves, but stopped when it only made the itching worse. Jack greeted Zane with a chin lift before he quietly got up from the sand since Dominic, Camilla, Rodrigo, and Reed were still asleep.

Instead of joining Adela and Gabriel at the rocks, he relieved himself against some bushes on the other side of their camp. He startled when Reed came up behind him, whistling a happy tune.

“Damn fine day to wake up in paradise, isn’t it?”

“Hmm.”

Reed ignored Jack’s mood and took a piss a few feet away from him. “I just feel like today is goin’ to be a good day.”

Jack had anything but a good feeling about today. Although he’d tried to stay positive for Adela’s sake, he couldn’t get any sleep last night as all kinds of scenarios crossed his mind about what could have happened with her friends.

“Your frown is ruining my happy mood,” Reed said after finishing up.

“Don’t you feel bad for the girls?”

Reed raked a hand through his sandy brown hair. “Look… I know you’re already invested in the quiet one—”

“Adela.”

“Right. Hey, there’s no shame in being thrown off your game. I mean, look at her.”
