The sweet laugh of Adela reached his ears as they approached the rocks. Although he should be glad that she enjoyed herself after feeling so sad last night, it irritated the fuck out of him that she shared a happy moment with Gabriel.

“¿Acabas de salir del horno? Porque estas caliente?”Gabriel said before playfully batting his long lashes at Adela, who busted out laughing. He hated that he didn’t understand what Gabriel just said to Adela.

“What the fuck am I missing here?” Jack said, mostly to himself through gritted teeth.

He jumped when Rodrigo said from behind him, “My brother asked if Adela came out of the oven because she’s hot.”

Jack wanted to punch Rodrigo’s grin from his face since he resembled his twin, but he climbed the rocks instead. He was thankful that Zane, Reed, and Rodrigo left his jealous ass and returned to their camp.

Jack climbed the dry rocks where Adela greeted him with a show-stopping smile, tempering the green-eyed monster that surprisingly had reared its ugly head.

“Good morning, gorgeous. How did you sleep?” he asked before sitting down next to Adela.

“Fine. And you?”

“All right. Have you been up long?”

She shook her head, biting her sexy as hell, plump bottom lip.

“Mornin’ Jack,” Gabriel said.

“Gabe…”

Jack couldn’t help but be a little stingy with his friend. Maybe Gabriel rubbed him the wrong way because, out of all five of his friends, Jack had expected Gabriel to be the last one to step in on the girl Jack obviously was interested in.

The delicate, wispy clouds above the ocean mesmerized Jack as he peered ahead from their elevated spot on the beach. As a wildland firefighter, he’d learned early on to read sudden changes in wind, shapes of clouds or animal behavior.

Jack pointed to the blue sky with the hair-like clouds. “At least the dark clouds are gone.”

“Those are cirrus clouds. They are often a sign of fair weather coming up,” Adela said. He liked how she surprised him with her answer.

Since she seemed to know her clouds, he said, “I think this nice weather will stay for a while, since the clouds are stationary.”

She tilted her head. “You know about clouds?”

“Yeah. I kind of have to while fighting wildfires. Relying on electronics as our only source of understanding the weather can be dangerous. Our team always keeps an eye out for the wind and clouds. You can never let your guard down.”

She nodded. “It’s the same for us sailors. My parents taught me all about reading clouds and other signs of nature when we used to live on a sailboat.”

“You lived on a boat?”

She smiled shyly. “Yeah. I’ve been born in the hospital in Ibiza, but I’ve spent the next eighteen years on a Beneteau Oceanis.”

“I don’t know what kind of boat that is. Sorry,” he said with an apologetic smile.

She giggled, the warm sound making his dick jerk in his trunks.

Gabriel whistled low. “That’s a nice boat.”

Of course, Gabriel knew which boat she’d lived on.

“My parents struck a good deal in selling our family home in Ibiza when prices were at an all-time high.”

“So your parents are Spanish as well?” Gabriel asked.

“Yeah, my father is from Ibiza but my mother is—I mean, was a blonde, blue-eyed Californian hippie who found the love of her life while backpacking through Europe.”

Jack felt her pain as she clearly found it hard talking about her mother in the past tense. He wondered if she’d lost her mother recently.
