Adela pulledup her knees to her chest, her feet resting steadily on the rocks. She didn’t know what to think of Jack, as he sounded upset with her.

“Gabriel told me he was about to marry someone called Mary. He’s heartbroken.”

She’d searched for words when Gabriel talked about still loving Mary, despite knowing that loving her wasn’t good for him. It wasn’t like she was an expert on anything remotely related to relationships or even dating.

Jack harrumphed. “Yeah, he’s so devastated that he’s sitting here with you, calling you beautiful and shit.”

She couldn’t believe Jack actually sounded… jealous?

“I’m sure he meant nothing by it. I just asked him about his life back in LA and we started talking about him breaking off his engagement. He asked me if I had a boyfriend and—”

“And you still didn’t think he was flirting with you?”

Adela pulled a brow. “You seem to know what we have said without even being here.”

“All I know is that if a guy asks a girl if there’s a boyfriend—”

“He wasn’t flirting. I told him I’m single and the first thing he said was that I should go for you. Gabriel thinks we would make a perfect couple.”

She had thought so too, before Jack acted like a jealous boyfriend out of nowhere.

Jack scratched the back of his head. “He did?”

“Yes. I told him how bad I am at flirting, so he shared bad pick up lines as a joke.”

“Oh.”

She thought he looked pretty cute, realizing he’d jumped to conclusions.

“Sorry…”

“Are you always this jealous?” She wanted to know sooner rather than later to keep her distance, if that’s the case. It would be just her luck to be stuck on an island with a crazy stalker.

“Never.”

A laugh escaped her lips at his quick and dry response. She instantly believed him. A guy looking as good as Jack would never need to chase a girl or even think about another guy swooping in.

She thought back to last night when most of the tall stories around the campfire included Zane, Reed and Jack’s sexcapades around LA. If she didn’t already thought Jack was way out of her league, hearing how he’s a certified bed-hopper would do the trick.

Adela had her very first kiss in her third week on campus. Third base only happened once with a guy from the physiology of marine animals class in her final year.

Jack would see straight through her soon enough and get bored with her. She had been happy to go pee in the ocean with Camilla, needing a break from the stories of Jack enjoying himself night after night with a different woman.

He slid his hand to the back of her neck, his green eyes holding her captive. She froze in shock, but his touch was soothing despite his firm hold.

“You’re the first woman to ever knock me down a few notches.”

She blinked in surprise. “What did I do?”

“I’m acting like a stupid kid because I have no idea how to handle this thing between us.”

She swallowed her dry throat before she croaked, “T-there’s athingbetween us?”

He leaned in, whispering against her neck, “I don’t know… does it feel like there’s something between us when I kiss you here?”

She sucked in a breath in anticipation. Her body had never reacted this strongly to the mere words of a man. He hadn't even kissed her, and a suffocating heat already built up inside her.

His full lips connected to her skin on top of her shoulder and a zing shot straight to the sweet spot between her legs. She squeezed her thighs together, biting back a moan.
