“Or maybe when I do this?”

He maneuvered his head to the side of her throat, sucking her skin into his hot mouth. She tried to hold her composure even though it felt like he’d set her on fire from the inside out.

His mouth would surely leave a mark on her throat, but as a shiver raked her spine, she didn’t care one freakin’ bit. She grabbed his bicep, holding herself steady—or maybe to keep herself from jumping him.

Adela sat stock-still when his face appeared in front of her. While his lips touched hers softly at first, the kiss rapidly grew so intense she felt as though she would melt into a puddle and slide right off the rocks.

His arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her to him. The fire building between them made her brave enough to open up and lick his lips. Jack met her tongue with his while a sound coming from the back of his throat spurred her on.

She brushed her thumb against the stubble on his cheek, reveling in the prickle against her skin. His hand splayed on her back as he deepened the kiss.

It took a long moment before she realized voices drew near from the beach. She pulled back, but Jack wasn’t having it and trailed his lips down to the spot where her neck met her shoulder.

“Jack…”

“There’s something about you that makes me want to haul you over my shoulder and have you all to myself.”

Her skin prickled as she listened to his low and husky voice.

“That doesn’t sound too bad.”

The words escaped her lips before she could stop them.

He pulled back, a blinding smile taking over his face. “Yeah?”

She laughed and covered her mouth with her hand.

His hand slid around her wrist before he softly pulled her hand away. “I’m crazy about that sound.”

She didn’t know why she always hid her smile or laugh. It wasn’t like she wasn’t supposed to laugh growing up. She’d loved her parents, enjoyed sailing with them and even considered them her best friends.

Raven’s mother, Minnie, a well-known Reiki Master, had once said that because Adela had grown up in an isolated environment only surrounded by her parents, she’d never had the chance to be a free spirit and explore her inner child.

At first, Adela had found it ridiculous. She’d traveled the world, seen almost every ocean and sea there is and Minnie dared to accuse her of not having a free spirit?

However, the longer she’d been surrounded by her friends, the more she’d realized that Minnie was right about the inner child bit. There had been so much she’d missed out on while growing up.

Like the little things like sleepovers with friends or shopping after school for a prom dress. Interacting with a group of girls—or rather; finding her place in groups all together proved rather difficult.

She had never fallen in and out of love before, but was now dangerously close to lose her mind over a hotshot firefighter who’d made it very clear he wanted her.

“I mean it. I’m going to make you laugh every day while we’re here.”

While we’re here

Isn’t that exactly what scared her the most? Jack probably just wanted to have some fun to pass time until they were rescued, while Adela would be left behind heartbroken without a backward glance from Jack.

Who was she kidding, anyway? She already came awfully close to catching feelings. If she hadn’t, she would never have shared this moment with Jack.

He was just so sweet and caring, yet also brazen enough to make it clear to everyone that he wanted her, staking his claim in a very caveman type of way.

Used to stressful situations, he had calmed her down and comfort her without even knowing her. Jack’s vibe told her he was used to taking care of others in a leading sort of way. After discovering that he fought wildfires, a lot of things clicked for her. She liked how in touch with nature he was, just like her. A guy in his line of work must also have a mad respect for nature, understanding that such magical beauty could turn devastatingly murderous in a heartbeat.

The way her body reacted to his kiss was unprecedented. She had no other choice than to go along and enjoy the ride. She just had to treat this like a summer romance. What else was she to do?

She already knew she couldn’t stay away from his cocky smile. She took him by surprise when she suddenly stood from the rock. “Let’s go back and see what the rest is up to.”

“Okay, gorgeous. Let’s go.”
