They climbed down the rocks, joining the group sitting around the campfire.

Camilla noticed them walking up and stood from the sand. “I’m heading out with Dom in a minute. Would you like to join us?”

“Eh…”

She felt Jack’s hand on her lower back and smiled up at him. “I think I’ll form a team with Jack.”

“Good choice,” Jack said with a wink.

Dominic also stood from his spot in the sand. “Okay, so Gabe and Rod already left to check the beaches nearby. Camilla is with me and Jack is with Adela. That leaves Zane and Reed as our last team.”

Jack nodded and said, “Hopefully, the twins will find the three girls and a hotel or whatever, but we also need to think about survival in the long run in case this really is a deserted island. We have a few things that need to be done today, like getting fresh water out of the lake, finding something to boil our water in over the fire other than beer cans, and we need to build a shelter. Oh, and we also need to have someone on fire duty.”

“Okay, that sounds fair,” Dominic said.

“Cami and I will head to the beach where the girls’ suitcases are and check if anything else has washed up last night.”

Adela read between the lines that they wanted to check if their missing friends had washed up after Adela and Camilla had left. Hopefully, they would find them all in good health today.

“What would you like to do today?” Jack asked her.

“Maybe us four can stay behind and rotate the chores around camp? We can go into the jungle and look for those palm leaves I once saw people used to make a roof?”

Jack nodded. “Sounds good. And I’ll keep my eye out for firewood and bigger branches for our shelter.”

“Everyone okay with me being in charge of building the shelter?” Zane asked.

“Just tell me what I need to do because I know shit about working construction. Now, if you need someone to tackle a wild beast…” Reed pointed his thumb to his chest, “Then I’m your man,” he said with a chuckle.

Dominic tore his eyes from his watch and said, “Okay, let’s do this. Nobody wanders off alone, stay safe and hopefully we’ll all see each other later tonight, or no later than tomorrow.”

Camilla hugged Adela close, whispering in her ear, “Stay safe, Adi.”

“You too. I hope you’ll find them,” Adela said with a wobble in her voice.

“We need to go,” Dominic said.

Adela nodded over Camilla’s shoulder. “Okay. Watch over her.”

Dominic stood a little taller when he solemnly said, “I promise.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Adi. Keep close to Jack and you’ll be fine.”

“I know. I just hate that we’re going to be apart. You’ve been my rock in all of this.”

Camilla brushed a stray hair from Adela’s face. “And you’re mine. These past couple of days have been a bit much, eh? No matter what happens… when I get back, we’ll go look for that magical place on the island for Emma and your mom.”

Adela swallowed back a sob. “I’d like that.”

She glanced over at Dominic eyeing his state-of-the-art watch. “Now go before he leaves without you.”

Camilla grinned. “Oh, he would never.”

“Damn straight,” Dominic said through gritted teeth.

Adela respected Camilla for being able to handle his level of sturdiness. Somehow, her bubbly personality matched well with Dominic’s intense sternness. Camilla never gave a shit about stepping on anyone’s toes or what people thought of her. She didn’t seem the least bit overwhelmed by the former Navy SEAL.

Adela watched her friend walk back into the jungle, taking Raven’s drawstring bag with her, probably to use it to store any finds on their trek.
