“You saw what I did there?”

She hummed and grabbed one frond and got to work. Doing this manual work, sitting in the shades with Reed, wasn’t all that bad. They’d been sitting next to each other in comfortable silence for fifteen minutes when Reed playfully bumped her with his insanely big bicep.

“You’re a natural.”

She giggled. “I don’t know about that.”

Her eyes drew to Jack talking to Zane, who made a construction to boil the lake water in the beer cans.

“So… I take it you guys had fun today?” Reed asked out of nowhere.

Adela coughed when spittle went down in the wrong pipe. How did he know? It probably showed all over her face that there had been some hanky-panky going on in the jungle.

Reed rubbed her back with a chuckle. “Are you all right?”

“Hmm-hm. Thanks.”

Jack headed straight over and Reed instantly dropped his hand.

“Are you okay?” Jack asked.

She splayed a hand over her chest. “I’m fine.”

“Good. Zane and I will search for the last bamboo poles for our shelter. We’ll be right back,” Jack said.

“Okay.”

Jack eyed her without moving his feet to get the poles. His intense stare made her shift her butt into the sand. What did he want from her? His eyes lowered to her lips. Oh. Did he want to kiss her before heading back into the jungle?

“Is there something we can help you with?” Reed joked when the silence between them turned awkward.

Her upper lip pulled at Jack’s irritated huff before he stomped closer. He grabbed her by the back of her head and pushed his lips against hers.

He broke their too short but heated kiss, sweeping her bottom lip with his thumb.

“See you in a bit, Adi.”

She nodded. “Stay safe.”

“Keep close to my boy, okay? He’ll keep you safe,” Jack said before eyeing Reed, who gave him a solemn nod.

“Of course I will. Go on. We’ll still be here when you’ll get back.”

Zane slapped Jack’s back. “Let’s go. See you later.”

“Yep,” Reed said.

“See you later,” Adela said.

She watched Jack and Zane head back into the jungle. She understood why Jack told her to keep close to Reed, since surviving on this deserted island was brutal, let alone on your own.

“He’s smitten, you know.”

She tore her eyes away from Jack’s retreating back stuck in a sweaty gray shirt.

“Excuse me?”

“Ah, come on. You must have noticed the way he looks at you.”
