She looked everywhere but at Reed. Where was he going with this? Jack hadn’t stepped one foot into the jungle, and Reed had already drilled her for information.

“I don’t know what you—”

“Hey, I’m happy for him. I definitely think Zane is, too. That’s why he’s made up this bullshit excuse to wander off for some one-on-one time.”

Her hands stilled. “One-on-one time?”

“Yeah. We’ve got enough poles here, sugar. They just want to touch base without us butting in.”

She puffed a strand of hair out of her face. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Was this normal behavior? Two guys needing some one-on-one time? Or did she miss some kind ofspecialconnection between Jack and Zane? Oh God…

Reed cocked his head as he scrutinized her. His eyes rounded before he quickly said, “Shit. Not like that!”

He busted out laughing and said, “If anyone in our group would ever swing that way, it would be Gabe. Nah, Zane and Jack are like brothers. Zane’s dad took Jack in after the car crash.”

Adela furrowed her brows. “Car crash?”

Reed raked a hand through his sandy brown hair. “Eh, yeah. Forget I said anything. I’m sure he’ll tell you about it.”

She wondered what happened to Jack and why he needed to live with Zane’s family after a car crash. Where was his family? Since Reed suddenly stood from his spot in the shades, she figured he was done talking about this topic.

She tried to grab the other end of the braided palm tree fronds, but Reed wasn’t having it.

“I’ve got it, sugar,” he said with a wink.

She followed him as he carried their finished work towards the cleared spot where they wanted to build a shelter.

He pushed one of the bamboo poles with his bare feet and sighed.

“We need Zane for this. I don’t know shit about building anything. Wanna cool off in the sea?”

His question took her by surprise. Did he think she was game for some fun with every single one of them?

“No, thanks. I’m good.” She hated how her voice cracked and couldn’t disguise her shock.

She stepped back when Reed took a step towards her. The playful glint in his eye was the only thing keeping her from running.

“What are you up to?” she asked.

“Relax, Adi. You’re not my type. We totally have a brother-sister-vibe. Don’t you agree?”

“Eh…”

“We share a special bond, though.” His eyes twinkled, and she felt like giggling. He couldn’t be serious.

“We do?”

“Come on, did you think I sit around braiding with just any girl?”

His remark, along with his boyish grin, made her laugh.

He gave her a playful nudge. “You’re safe from the Reed Jacobs treatment, Adi.”

“What the hell is that?” she blurted.

“I’m hoping one of your friends will find out eventually.”
