She broke eye contact and stared up at the sky again. Somewhere in the back of her mind, a tiny voice said that nobody waited on her back home, anyway. She felt sorry for her friends, who all had family members that were probably scared out of their minds by now.
“If we do get back, will you adopt me as your little sister?”
She’d said it in a joking manner, but after a few waves passed without him responding, she felt uneasy again. It made her realize how, in the past hours, they’d easily slipped into an unusual friendship. She’d never experienced this male friend dynamic before. She’d always kept most guys at arm’s length.
“Let’s not wait till we get back, eh? I’ve always wanted a little sister.”
She smiled at him. “Yeah?”
Her heart raced against her chest when he suddenly stood from his spot and hauled her over his shoulder.

He threw her into the ocean with a booming laugh until she dunked into the ocean with a shriek.
“I’ll get you for this!” she said after popping up for air, her wet hair framing her face like a wet cat.
Reed exaggerated a fake shudder. “Oh, no… I’m so scared!”
“You should be,” Jack suddenly said from behind them.

“That’s right! Stop flirting with Adi.”
Reed’s laugh traveled the water from a distance. “I would never! I’ve just officially baptized her as my little sister.”
She laughed. “Oh, that’s why you threw me into the ocean?”
“Nah… I just wanted to mess with you. It was fun watching your face when you realized you were about to go under.”
“Ha ha. I’m going to sit back and enjoy how you’ll go down soon enough,” she said.
“How’s that?”
“I hope that one of my girls is going to knock you down a peg or two.”
“Oh, I’m ready…” Reed pumped his hips in the water while he held both hands in front of him, mimicking holding on to someone’s hips.
His stupid antics even made Jack laugh out loud.
“Oh, yeah?” she asked.
“Reed Jacobs was born ready, sis.”
She splashed water in Reed’s direction and failed to notice that Jack had come up to her. He snaked his arm around her waist and pulled her in, her butt instantly connecting to his hardness underneath his trunks.
