“I can’t remember this thing being this heavy,” she said.

“Have a look inside, Adi. The code is 1414.”

Adela pulled a brow. “How do you know Raven’s code, anyway?”

“Easy! It’s her lucky number,” Camilla said.

Adela fumbled with the lock on the purple suitcase before she slung back the top half into the sand.

Jack smiled as he watched her brown eyes grow big. “What in the world…”

Camilla stood from her seat and shouted, “And you get a banana! And you get a banana! And you get a banana,” while pointing at each and everyone of them.

The joke was lost on Jack, but Adela found it hilarious.

“This is way better than a car from Oprah! I’m so hungry!” Adela said before ripping a banana from a bunch and hastily peeling it.

“So fuckin’ good,” Reed said with his mouth full.

Jack laughed as he watched his friends munch on the yellow fruit.

“Here,” Adela said as she handed him a second banana.

“Thanks, babe.”

“Come sit for a moment,” Camilla said to Adela as she padded the sand next to her on the other side of the fire.

Jack felt weirdly annoyed with Camilla demanding Adela’s full attention. It wasn’t like him to be petty and childish, so he quickly concentrated on Dominic’s story.

“We emptied one suitcase and stuffed everything into the other two suitcases so I could carry them. Nothing else washed up, unfortunately. I think I’ll head back soon, since I have an idea where the current could have taken stuff from their boat.”

Jack knew that Dominic not only meant stuff from their boat, but also the three missing girls. Day three was almost over, and their chances of survival would decrease each passing day.

He watched how Adela clung to every word Camilla said. She needed those three girls to survive. If any of them washed up in a bad way, he didn’t know if he could comfort her.

“Any sign of the girls?” Reed kept his voice so low that Jack almost missed it.

Dominic shook his head. “You guys know I’m trained to look out for fresh tracks or any signs that indicate someone’s been there recently. Nothing, man.”

“Shit…” Zane said.

Dominic watched Camilla for a long moment through the flames before he said, “Yeah. Cami is good at keeping up a front, but she’s worried sick.”

“So is Adi,” Reed said.

“How is she holding up?” Dominic nudged his chin in Adela’s direction.

Jack sighed. “Up and downs. She feels responsible for what happened. Nightmares. Guilt. You name it. You know how it is. We’ve both been there.”

Dominic closed his eyes briefly as he nodded. “Unfortunately.”

“I’m going to show Cami our hut,” Adela said while standing up.

“Oh, so is that the girl’s hut and the hut over there the boys’?” Camilla asked.

“Fuck no. You’re staying with me,” Dominic said.

Reed busted out laughing. “I told you, Adi. One fuckin’ yard. I swear that’s all it took.”
