Dominic stuck his head out of the side of his hut. “What’s wrong?”

“Is Adela with you?”

“Adela isn’t here. Maybe she’s pissing in the woods?” Dominic shouted.

“Nah, man. She always goes in the ocean,” Reed said.

“Reed.”

Jack took a deep breath through his nose. Even though Reed had been right, and Jack therefore didn’t even bother to check the jungle, he didn’t want to share that detail with the rest of the group.

Reed didn’t listen to Jack’s admonishment and continued, “What? Have you seen her head into the jungle in these past few days? I’ll bet you anything that she also takes a dump in the ocean. I know I do.”

“Reed. Can you stop talking for a second?” Jack roared.

“Geez. If this is what loves does to people: I don’t want it,” Reed said before he walked back to his hut.

Love.

Jack weighed the word in his head. Did he already love Adela?

He had no other excuse for acting this obsessive with the girl that made him feel alive for the first time in years.

One thing he knew for sure: he needed her back and right by his side.

Zane walked towards them from the big rock further down the beach—alone.

Where the fuck was she?

Jack met Zane halfway on the beach.

“Do you know where Adela is?” Jack asked.

“She ain’t back?”

Jack cocked his head. “What do you mean, ‘back’?”

“She was already gone when I got up.”

“When was this?”

Zane eyed his watch. “A half hour ago.”

Jack also checked the time, noticing that it was a quarter to eight. He furrowed his brows and said, “Where could she be?”

“I don’t know. I went to look for her in the ocean, but she wasn’t there. So I just went to that big rock where you two talked yesterday, and she ain’t there either. I was just about to head back and wake you, but you’re already here.”

Jack took his jaw in his hand. “Shit. Where can she be?”

“She’s gone looking for the girls,” Dominic said from behind him.

“Huh?”

“It’s the first thing Cami said when she heard Adela wasn’t here.”

“Where’s Cami?” Jack asked.

“She’s putting on some clothes to go look for her. Not that I’ll let her, but she needed to cover up, anyway,” Dominic said.
