Why did she leave him without a word of goodbye? Didn’t she realize that she’d acted just like her father? She just snuck out of the hut in the middle of the night, doing her own thing—not caring about the rest and how they would worry about her.

“Fuckin’ selfish…” Jack mumbled.

Zane sighed. “She’s obviously not thinking clear, Jack. We both know she’s been struggling with all kinds of things. Don’t take it personal, man.”

“That’s kind of hard to do when the love of your life just sneaks out on you, bringing herself in danger, all because of some stupid remark Dom made. I just don’t get it. Why didn’t she come to me?”

Zane took a sip from his can, clearly taking his time to answer.

“I think she’s scared. Cami told me last night at the fire when you were already off to bed that Adi has never been in a relationship before. She has trust issues a blind man can see from a mile away. Even her best friend said that it’s hard to get to the core of Adi.”

Jack sniffed. “I thought I came pretty close.”

Zane nodded. “I think you did, too. Maybe that’s why she’s running.”

Zane nudged his chin towards the dooming rocks two miles ahead. “Knowing Adi, she went over those rocks towards that cliff.”

“Why?”

“Your girl may be hard to read and a hard nut to crack, but I think it’s safe to say that she would do anything for her friends. She’ll not rest until she finds them. Those fucking rocks won’t stop her, man.”

Jack knew his friend was right.

He brought a hand to the back of his neck. “Fuck...”

Jack checked the wind and watched the gigantic waves for a moment.

“I don’t know if we can make it in time before that storm hits.”

Zane passed him and said over his shoulder, “Let’s get your girl. And she better not give us any sass, because your girl or not, I’ll whoop her ass for being a handful.”

Jack narrowed his eyes. “You’re an idiot if you think I’ll let you anywhere near Adi. I’ve seen up close often enough how you enjoy a good spanking.”

Zane chuckled. “Hey, she has the right ass for a good smacking. Wouldn’t mind a threesome for old times’ sake with Adi in between us.”

Jack would never share Adela. Tag teaming girls with Zane had been fun in the past, but Adela was his future. Jack had to agree with Zane, though; he’d wanted to experiment with spanking next. He wondered if she would like it from behind, as he would slap her ass.

“Get your head out of the gutter, Jack. I need you to think as a wildlife firefighter right now.”

Jack shook his head, shaking off the images of all the things he wanted to do with Adela. “You’re right. Sorry.”

“Since you do this kind of stuff for a living, you go first and I’ll follow. Hiking this kind of terrain isn’t my usual day at the office,” Zane said.

“Right. Okay, let’s go,” Jack said as he took the first few steps on the rocks.

His fingers turned white as he gripped a rock to his right.

“Are you all right?” he asked over his shoulder.

Zane followed him closely, the stern look on his face giving away how hard they needed to work to go forward.

“I’m okay. I’m just hoping that I get one little spank in—just for my fuckin’ effort…”

Jack huffed a laugh. “Let’s hope she found her three missing friends, because you’re not touching my girl.”

“So, she’s still your girl, eh?” Zane asked after grabbing another rock and climbing next to Jack.

“Always.”
