“No. We don’t have time for a reunion. That storm above the ocean will hit us any minute. The tide is coming and we’re stuck if we don’t get out of here now.”

“I love you, Hails,” Adela said.

“I… love… you,” Hailey said before her head lolled back.

“Fuck! Adi, do you have any water left?” Zane shouted.

Adela wobbled and almost slipped and fell once more, but she ultimately made it to the cove.

“Here…” she said as she brought the can with boiled lake water to Hailey’s lips.

“Drink it, sugar. Open those fat lips and drink the fuckin’ water!”

Hailey opened her blue eyes and took a few sips before she licked her cracked lips.

“Damn. How long didn’t you have had a drink?” Zane asked her.

“W-what day… is… it?”

Adela spied one empty bottle of water at the back of the cove and felt for Hailey, who probably went without water for a long time.

Zane rumbled, “I can’t fuckin’ believe it!”

“You…” Hailey said to Zane.

“Me what?” Zane asked with furrowed brows.

“You… have… bad bedside… manners.”

Adela busted out laughing as she took in Zane’s shocked face.

“I’ll show you my bedside manners as soon as you’re recovered,” he grumbled.

“Zane!” Adela admonished.

Hailey waved a hand at Adela, “Water…”

Adela grinned, “Yeah, of course you want your water after Zane’s threat.”

Hailey winked at Adela.

Zane groaned. “Drink the rest of the water. We need to go soon.”

Hailey finished the can and wiped the back of her hand over her mouth. “So bossy… I like it.”

“Fuckin’ hell…” Zane said while he maneuvered Hailey so she rode him piggyback-style.

“Hold on. If it get’s too much, you tell me. Okay, sugar?” Zane said to Hailey.

She whispered something in his ear, which Adela couldn’t overhear. But going by the groan of Zane, Adela figured it was probably something inappropriate. Adela was glad that the old Hailey was slowly returning.

“It’s good to have you back, Hails,” Adela said as she gave her a side hug while Hailey clung to Zane’s back.

“Love you, Adi. I can’t believe I heard your voice. I’ve been calling out for days and felt so alone...”

Adela followed Zane, who didn’t wait on their reunion and climbed into a different direction than Adela came from.

“Let’s go, Adi. Jack is waiting for us on the other side. I’m sure he’s goin’ out of his mind by now.”
