Adela and Hailey shrieked when another bolt of lightning zigzagged through the sky.

“It’s okay, Adi. We need to push through just a bit more.”

“Should we even go down to the trees?” Adela shouted over the pattering rain and howling wind.

“Main thing now is to get out of the open space, sweetheart!”

He brought them all into the jungle and crouched down low first. Adela did the same, four feet away from him.

Zane sat down on the jungle floor with Hailey in his lap.

“Jack! Can you bring me a banana?”

Jack took a banana out of the hideous bag Camilla had prepared for their hike and handed it over to Zane. After peeling the banana, Zane broke off small pieces of banana and fed them to Hailey.

“Easy, honey. If you eat too fast, you’ll get stomachache,” Zane said to Hailey.

Jack shared a look of surprise with Adela at hearing Zane’s endearment for Hailey.

Adela crouched closer to Jack and kissed him while the rain made the trees and undergrowth surrounding them smell amazing. He knew he still needed to be vigilant, but he couldn’t help himself as he got lost in Adela in this moment.

He loved how she sought him out for warmth and shelter as rain droplets beaded their hair.

“I love you, Adi.”

Jack’s upper lip pulled as her beaming smile seemed to push away the dark clouds above the island.

“I love you, too.”

The thunder rumbled further away, and he felt Adela somewhat relax in his arms.

“Let’s go, man. I want Hailey to rest in one of our huts tonight,” Zane said.

Jack nodded. It hadn’t stopped raining yet, but the thunder was far enough away.

“Yeah, let’s go. My palms have a date with Adela’s ass the minute we get back, anyway.”

“Oh,” Adela said as her cheeks turned beet-red.

Adela tripped over her own feet and he shot out his hand, holding her upright at the very last second.

“Watch your step, babe. You’ve already hurt your rib. Maybe I should postpone our plans…”

“Most definitely not.”

Adela whispered, not low enough, since Hailey clapped her hands in excitement. “Oh, can I watch?”

“What the fuck? That banana worked wonders, I suppose?” Zane asked her with an amused smile around his lips.

Adela giggled. “I already told Reed that Hailey is the female version of him.”

Zane groaned. “Fuckin’ hell… I guess it’s too late to leave her behind, then?”

“Hey!” Hailey said as she playfully slapped the back of Zane’s head.

Jack eyed his best friend who, despite acting all grumpy, most definitely had taken an interest in the slender blonde who’d survived four days on her own in a cove at a deserted beach.

“One found… two to go…” Adela whispered as she stared at Zane, carrying Hailey on his back through the jungle.
