He woke with his feet kicking in a startle. He looked over at Kate, who was still sound asleep. Her hands were still clasped under her rosy cheek, and he trailed a finger over her sweet little nose. Lifting the comforter gently, he slipped out of bed to walk straight to his home office.
Although he’d deleted the security footage from the elevator in Kate’s building the minute they sat in his truck, he’d dreamed of missing a loophole in their security system, and the nagging feeling from his dream made him need to check things once again.

“Hey, cupcake,” he said, keeping his eyes on his screen while running his apps and typing passwords when needed.
She laid her hands on his shoulders and leaned in to kiss the top of his head. “What are you—is that my apartment building?” she said in confusion.
“Yep.”
She let go of his shoulders and stood next to his chair to get a better look at his screen. “Why are we looking at people going in and out of my elevator?”
He grinned before he took her by the hips and placed her on his lap as she let out a cute surprised yelp. “Because, cupcake, nobody needs to see me tongue fucking my beautiful girlfriend into oblivion. I wanted to make sure that the security tape is really gone and nobody has watched it yet.”
She let his words sink in and looked from his computer back to him. “Oh. Umm, shouldn’t you have done this sooner, then?”
He snickered as she didn’t even blink at him confessing to hacking into the system. That was a positive thing. Maybe she wouldn’t be as freaked out about his stalking ways after all? “Yeah, I did it earlier, but I needed to check something… and there, all is okay. I’ve double-checked everything and we’re in the clear.”

She shuddered in his arms, so he knew she definitely heard him, but he needed her full attention for the following words. “But when you take this insane push and pull between us out of the equation, I think you need to know that what really made me fall for you was your beauty on the inside.”
Kate put her head against his shoulder in an attempt to hide her embarrassment. He felt her sigh against his naked skin, and the hair rose at the back of his neck.
“I mean it, cupcake. The way you always put others before yourself—so selfless. So sweet and caring. Look what you’re doing with this play at work. I know it was your idea to really go all-out this year. The kids are going to love it.”
He felt a little tear fall at his chest and realized she must be in tears after his words. That wasn’t his intention, so he laid her on top of the comforter. While hovering over her, he swiped the tears from her reddened cheeks with his thumbs.
“You okay?” he asked before softly kissing her lips.
She looked up into his eyes and nodded. Just when he thought she wasn’t going to answer him, she whispered, “I’ve fallen for you too.” And another tear fell from the corner of her eye, and he kissed it away.
“Why are you sad?”
After gathering her thoughts, she spoke softly. “I… I can’t explain it really. I’m really scared I guess. Scared that you’ll come to your senses and—”
He narrowed his eyes and briskly stood from the bed. Her eyes grew wide when he swiftly rid himself of his boxer shorts. He grabbed her legs and yanked her to the edge of the bed.
