“Come sit with me.”

Kate nodded and shuffled awkwardly toward the sofa, planting herself next to him with enough room to put a pillow between them. When he angled his body toward her, his eyes raked her from head to toe.

His sudden bark of laughter had Kate nearly jumping off the sofa. It was all that was needed to free her from the Donovan trance she had been in since the first time they’d met.

She looked at him sitting in her apartment, dressed to the nines in a black dress shirt and slacks, with his domineering aura and that beautiful face… laughing at her. She hadn’t asked him to come over. She didn’t want to feel self-conscious, even if her outfit was rather ridiculous. Wasn’t there a bimbo at the party for him to take home? Why was he even here?

“Get out,” she said in a calm, even voice as she narrowed her eyes at him.

He instantly stopped laughing, and his eyes grew big. “Pardon?”

“I want you to leave. Now.” Kate stood from the sofa and headed for the door. When she reached to pull it open for him, two big hands on her shoulders halted her. Even though he hurt her feelings, she still felt safe with him, but he’d ripped open old wounds. She never wanted to go down that road again, not even for him. Who in the hell did he think he was?
