Declan stood with one foot on the first step of the stairs as he urged Bree to come down. “Come on, love. If we don’t leave now, we’re going to lose our reservation.”

“I’ll see what’s taking her so long.” Fianna passed Declan on the stairs and walked into the master bedroom.

Bree stood in front of the mirror and said, “Can you zip me up?” Fianna nodded and slid Bree’s bouncy dark curls over one shoulder before she pulled the zipper of the little black dress up.

“Thanks, sis. Also, for staying the night.”

Fianna leaned her chin on Bree’s bare shoulder and watched their reflection in the mirror. “You don’t need to thank me. I get to have them all by myself without you and Dec hanging around. Now I can spoil them rotten.”

Bree rolled her eyes. “You spoil them anyway.”

Fianna chuckled. Her sister was right.

They both jumped when Declan entered the bedroom. “Okay, I’m ready to take my wife out for dinner.”

“I’m sorry, Dec.”

Declan kissed Bree’s cheek. He whispered something in her ear, making Bree beet red in the face.

“Okay, go on, you two. Or you’ll never leave.” Fianna was only half joking.

Bree and Declan kissed their kids good night, who seemed too busy playing with their trains on the bedroom floor to notice.

“Call me if you need anything. We’ll be back around—”

Fianna interrupted her sister and said, “Nuh-uh. No curfew. I’m staying the weekend, remember? You’ve got the whole night and tomorrow night to yourself.”

“Okay, Dean and Ava, listen to auntie Fi, okay?” Declan said.

The twins nodded with their thumbs in their mouth.

Declan and Bree finally left, and Fianna settled on the carpet on the bedroom floor with her legs crossed. After their homemade pizza dinner earlier tonight, the twins had been in the bath and changed into their pajamas, so the only thing left to do was reading them a bedtime story.

“Okay, little ones. Shall I tell you a little story before we go to bed?”

Dean nodded while Ava climbed Fianna’s lap. “Story...” she said.

Fianna weaved her fingers through Ava’s dark curly hair, remembering how she used to do the exact thing with Bree’s hair when they were kids.

“Once upon a time, there was a prince and a princess.”

Fianna smiled when Dean picked up his train and started playing again. Maybe that’s the reason Bree put the twins in bed before telling them a bedtime story.

Dean still listened with half an ear, but just like every other Mills man she knew, he couldn’t sit still long enough to hear Fianna’s story.

“Story...” Ava said around her wet thumb.

“Um, right. The prince in this story is a brave knight, and he rides a beautiful dark horse...”

An image of Ronan riding her horse, Stormchaser, popped into her head. She blinked it away and continued her made-up story. “He was a warrior prince with strong arms and muscular legs as thick as tree trunks. With his fists and high kicks, he knocked the wind out of anyone who dared to come near his princess.”

“Damn right I will,” Ronan’s deep voice came from right behind her.

She clutched Ava to her chest as she shrieked. “You scared the absolute shit out of me!”

Ronan tsk’d and chuckled. “Language, Princess.”

He’d started the nickname Princess soon after they first laid eyes on each other. Bree had accidentally knocked Declan into a puddle the day they’d moved in next doors. Ronan directly came to Declan’s aid, but Fianna wasn’t having it and cussed him out, standing up for her sister.
