She took a sip of water before she said, “I teach horse riding at a farm just outside of Austin. And you?”

This conversation seemed more like a six-minute speed date than the one she had earlier.

“I’m a senior partner at a downtown law firm. I’m thirty-eight. I have a calico cat at home and I hate vacuuming, so I recently bought one of those robotic vacuums.”

“Oh. Nice,” she said.

She swiveled on her seat. Why did she suddenly get nervous? Was it because Carlos sounded good on paper?

After another smile of Carlos, she pinched her leg under the table. She needed to get over these stupid nerves. She finally had a man sitting across from her who had the potential to become something more than a funny anecdote during Sunday brunch with her friends.

This could be it.

“Did you get one that also mops the floor?”

She inwardly groaned. Out of all the things she could have said…

Carlos chuckled. He thanked the waitress before he took a sip from his whiskey.

“I did. I figured I might as well go all out.”

She laughed at his cheeky wink.

He seemed confident, but also at ease enough to not take himself too seriously. She liked that in a man. Oh, come on. Think about something witty to say.

“Are there any other tasks you’d wish a robot could do for you?” she finally said.

He scrutinized her from his side of the booth. Oh, she really liked his dark brown eyes on her.

“Hmm. Good question. I think I would like an intelligent wardrobe that can advise you on what to wear. I had three different outfits on before I finally stepped out of my penthouse.”

She didn’t know how she felt about him slipping in the fact he owned a penthouse. He didn’t have to mention it. But then again, why should he hide it?

For some reason, she looked for the faults in Carlos, trying to decipher the reason this man was still single, instead of actually figuring out if he had any likeable traits.

“Only three? I raise you with five outfits.”

He joined her laugh.

“This dress looks amazing on you. The color matches your eyes.”

His remark proved that he took notice of the little things and she liked that. “Thank you.”

The waitress stopped by their booth and said, “Everything all right here? Can I get you anything else?”

“Do you have a bottle of Liber Pater Blanc?”

By the look of the waitress, Fianna guessed it was something posh that Carlos just ordered. Carlos leaned over the table. “You’ll love the taste of this wine. It’s exquisite.”

“Oh. I’m not really drinking tonight.” She had that awful cocktail during her speed date and before they started dancing, she downed several shots at the bar with Mae and Emmy. She didn’t want to get hammered.

He ignored her comment all together and said, “I assure you that the moment you’ll taste this wine, you’ll thank me later.”

She didn’t like his dismissive tone of voice. Before she could call him out, the waitress came up to their booth and placed a side table with an ice bucket next to them. “Thank you,” Carlos said and slipped his credit card in the hand of the waitress.

Carlos took the bottle from the ice bucket. “There’s an aristocratic etiquette for pouring wine.”

“Oh?”
