Even though he could somewhat relate to this overprotective big brother bristling in front of him, Devlin still needed to show Ryan that he wasn’t some pussy who would fuck off with his tail between his legs at the first halfhearted threat thrown at him.

It meant he had to tread on thin ice while holding his ground—respectfully.

“Look. I have two younger sisters. I get it. You see me rollin’ up on my bike, wearing my cut—”

Ryan waved a hand in the air. “It’s not even that. Well, I’m not gonna lie; I’m not happy about that, either. Just how old are you, man?”

“Thirty-seven.”

Ryan scowled. A long silence stretched between them before he muttered, “You know my sister’s only twenty-one, right? She’s got her whole life still in front of her. She can’t be throwing her life away with some biker who probably has plenty of women warming his bed every night. I don’t want that life for Teagan.”

“Me neither.”

“Huh?” Ryan arched a brow.

“I don’t want this for Teagan, either. I’ve tried to do the right thing by warning her I’m nothing like the boys she’s used to.”

Ryan’s jaw ticked. “My little sister isn’t used to any boys. That’s my whole point. You need to stay away from her.”

Devlin wasn’t about to clue the poor guy in that his ‘little sister’ hadn’t been a virgin when they’d screwed each other’s brains out. Or that his innocent sister had danced the pole and got every single dick in his club hard in less than twenty seconds.

Their age difference, his past of fuckin’ every willing sweetbutt and his doubts about being able to stay monogamous had been enough reason for him to stay away from her in those first weeks after meeting her.

But after that first taste of Teagan, Devlin knew she was single-handedly the most sexy, most responsive lover he’d ever had. Their connection… Fuck. It made everything they did out of this world. By connecting their minds and souls, he didn’t have sex with her just to get off. Devlin wanted to get closer to her—to know her in every way possible. He still wondered what she’d meant about her past mistakes costing her dearly. He needed to have more time with her.

“You got nothin’ to say for yourself?”

Devlin shook his head. “Nah. I’ve got nothin’ you’d like to hear, man. But I’ll tell you this: I’m always up front. Teagan knows the score. I would never hurt her. I can promise you that.”

“What do you mean with: ‘Teagan knows the score’. You’re tellin’ me that my sister is goin’ along with that biker bullshit?”

Devlin took a deep breath through his nostrils. His patience was wearing thin and by the look of Ryan puffing out his chest, he’d made it clear that they were headed to an impasse.

“That’s not what I’m saying. Look. I don’t want to start off on the wrong foot. Like I said: I get where you’re coming from. I’ll not hurt your sister in any way. We’re trying to figure things out between us. And that’s how it should stay: as something between her and me.”

“You can fuck off right now if you’d think I was goin’ to leave it at that.”

Devlin turned his back on Ryan. He needed to start his bike and hit the road before he would hurt the fucker.

As he got on his bike, he said, “I’m leaving because I care about your sister. I know she wouldn’t like for us to fight. I’ll give you fair warning though: if you tell me to fuck off once again, I’ll take that as fighting words.”

Ryan snorted. “Like I give a fuck. There would have to be three of you to keep me from protecting my baby sister.”

Devlin’s upper lip pulled. This guy would make a fine brother in his club—if he would get over his bias about the MC and could take orders from the officers.

“I’ll see you around,” Devlin said before he revved his engine, dirt spatting up from behind his wheel.

“I’ll be on the lookout, asshole,” Ryan said.

Devlin laughed and hit the road. Damn. He’d promised Teagan to check in with her later and even have dinner at that Irish pub she worked. He already knew that he would see Ryan Moore there tonight. Maybe he should take Kieran with him to this pub. Better to show up with an outstanding fire fighter since Devlin was about to add fuel to the fire tonight.
