CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Devlin sat backon his grandmother’s couch and closed his eyes for a second. He sighed in annoyance. Whenever his sisters and cousins were in the same room, they would turn into this cackling pack of hyenas.

He usually enjoyed this weekly dinner with his grandparents, his cousins Ryleigh and Mia and his sisters, Nora and Catriona. He would hang around for a bit while his grandparents would have their walk after dinner to their friends, a few houses over.

But tonight his head wasn’t into it. He’d been quiet all night.

In fact, he’d been in a shit mood for three weeks now. His mind wandered back to the angelic, petite blonde with the hurt in her eyes as she walked out of his room at the clubhouse. She hadn’t lied to him about being done with him. She hadn’t tried once to contact him. He could have picked up his phone, but he didn’t know what to say to her either.

At first, he’d been stunned. Devlin just couldn’t believe she would get that much upset about him being real with her. He’d made her his girlfriend. He’d promised her to stay loyal. What more could she possibly want from him?

Then a day later, he got mad. He figured she was acting out like a twenty-one-year-old, who still believed in fairytales. Someone needed to be the realist in their relationship. She wasn’t going to be that one, as she got mad at him for only making her his girlfriend instead of his Old Lady—after only a few weeks’ time of knowing her, no less.

He felt himself getting worked up again. He stood from the couch and entered the kitchen, where he found Nora cleaning up.

“Didn’t we agree on cleaning up later, together?” He instantly regretted his curt voice when his sister jumped, bringing a hand to her chest.

“Sorry.” He placed his hand on her shoulder, and she instantly relaxed under his touch.

“What’s up, sis?”

She shook her head. “Nothing.”

“That so?” He arched a brow.

She closed the full dishwasher, righted her shoulders and met his gaze head on. “Nothing going on with me. Not more than there is with you.”

His laugh made her gray eyes dance in amusement. Almost everyone underestimated Nora since her twin Catriona was the loud and very brazen one.

But he knew better.

Nora was smart, witty, and always truthful. She never failed to amaze him, and he respected her opinion.

“You really want to go into all of that, eh?” He leaned his hip against the counter, mirroring his sister’s stance.

“Yeah. I can’t believe it’s over between you and Teagan. I really liked her for you, Dev. We all did.”

He shook his head. “Nah. Not going there, sis. I’m not made for a girl like her. She wants things I can’t give her.”

Something flashed in her eyes before she hid it from him. He wondered what that was all about.

“Maybe she is made for you and you have to get over yourself already. You alpha bikers all think to know what’s best, even when you’re dead wrong.”

With that parting shot, she left the kitchen.

He would have to pay closer attention to his sisters while they visited him at the club. Her words about alpha bikers alarmed him. He wondered who’d been sniffing around his sister.

He’d figured that one day, Catriona would eventually join his world. She had everything it took to be one of his brothers’ Old Lady. Not only was she loyal, Catriona wouldn’t take any shit from anyone. As an MMA fighter herself, she could handle herself against jealous sweetbutts or even bikers from other MCs.

Now that she was almost twenty-one, he was sure it wouldn’t take long before one of his brothers would knock on his door to get his permission.

But hearing Nora talk about bikers? That scared the shit out of him. Nora was loyal, yes. But unlike her sister, they would eat her alive at the clubhouse.

Just like Teagan.

After one look at his brothers going at it with a sweetbutt at the clubhouse who bragged about fuckin’ him, she demanded to know the deal between them. Seeing the ugly truth of biker life before her eyes made her retreat from him. He understood she wanted to know if he would stay loyal.

Devlin never fucked anyone over and therefor he told her the truth. He would never cheat on her. And if his feelings would change, he would first end things between them before hooking up with anyone else.
