Because he had been driven to the last of his patience.

Which was not really an excuse. Nathan had never reached the end of his patience before, no matter the provocation. Ladies who tried to provoke him were always disappointed.

Except Miss Davies. Perhaps it was because the stakes were so high, whereas, at the Society, there was very little risk. This was real life, though, not a game.

Shifting movement caught his eye, and he turned his head to see Miss Davies was still staring off into space, but she was also now squirming on the chair in a very familiar manner—like a naughty, well-punished member of the Society.

His cock jerked to attention as he realized she was not traumatized.

She was aroused.

Blasted hell. Now, so was he.

ChapterSeven

Nathan

If there was anything more torturous than being stuck with an aroused woman who was a debutante possibly involved with treachery, who he could not touch and should not have touched in the first place, yet was wildly attracted to, Nathan did not know what it was.

And the rain was not letting up.

He kept away from her, well on the other side of the cottage, staying by the fire and trying to pretend she was not there. Unfortunately, his body had no interest in such pretense, and every soft sound she made was met with a throbbing reaction from his cock. His balls were aching as his erection went untended.

He had not been this sexually frustrated since he was a youth, still trying to figure out how his body worked. If it was not raining so hard, he would go out to relieve himself.

If it was not raining so hard, I would have never been trapped in this situation in the first place.

What to do now?

Trying to make conversation while he had an erection and she was still sitting on a hot bottom and wriggling with arousal did not appeal, but the silence felt just as awkward.

And the damn rain was still not letting up.

Nathan’s stomach growled.

Damn. How long had they been there? With the rain pouring down, it was impossible to tell the position of the sun, and he did not have his pocket watch with him. He had been feeding the fire, so he could not even tell by how much the fire had burned down, though if the amount of wood he’d used was a sign, it had been longer than he’d realized. He had gone through quite a bit without realizing it.

“I think it must be getting close to suppertime.” It was not a conversation starter, not really, but he did not want to startle her when he got up to search more of the cottage. Miss Davies jerked in surprise before looking at him. There was a deep blush on her cheeks when she lifted her chin and answered him.

“Yes. I did not see any food when I was looking earlier, but I did not check everywhere.”

As if by silent agreement, they searched through opposite sides of the cottage. Nathan looked through the boxes and tins on the shelves on his side while Lily opened the drawers by the bed.

“Hardtack and some dried meat,” Nathan said, looking up to see how Lily would react. She made a face, but she was busy pulling sheets and blankets out of the drawers. “What are you doing?”

“I am going to make the bed.” Her tone sounded a bit aggrieved, and she kept her gaze averted from his. “Since it appears we are likely to be stuck here overnight.”

Blast, she was right. If it was late enough for supper, and the rain had not let up, it was late enough they would make it back to London or anywhere else. They would be stuck together in the cottage tonight.

Nathan supposed he should start preparing himself for marriage to Miss Lillian Davies. Preparing himself to bed her would be far too easy, but he doubted she would happily take a suggestion to further their intimacies in preparation for marriage. There was always the chance, somehow, they might get out of making that final leap, but not if they actually did the deed.

Of course, now that he had the thought, he could not stop thinking about it. Could not stop remembering the glimpses of her pale legs, the feel of her body pressed against his lap, her squirming atop him, and her skin warming as he laid his hand down on her bottom. Could not stop glancing over to watch her graceful movements, notice the curls caressing the back of her neck, and watch her bend over to drape the sheets across the bed, so her bottom was pointed directly at him.

Lily

The most infuriating thing about this entire situation was how hot she felt all over while Captain Jones remained utterly cold. Cold physically, cold emotionally, and cold to her plight. The man did not care that her reputation would be ruined after this. He did not even seem to care that the highwayman had gotten away.
