Lily raised a haughty eyebrow.

He had not realized he drew her face on the woman, but the likeness to her was irrefutable whether or not intended. Truthfully, it gave her a bit of a thrill. Not only to see her likeness in such a compromising and exciting position but to know she had been on his mind, even if he had not realized it.

Perhaps there was more to this marriage than she’d initially realized.

Nathan

How the devil had he drawn Lily’s face on the woman?

This particular drawing had been sketched not long after they’d first met, but Nathan would have sworn he was not thinking of any woman in particular when he’d made it. He certainly had not realized the resemblance until the drawing and Lily were right in front of him, and he could no longer ignore it.

Some part of his subconsciousness must have been thinking about Lily when he’d been working on his latest creation.

Now, they both knew it.

Glancing at his wife, the smugness in her expression, in her delicately arched brow, made his palm itch even more.

She thought she had the upper hand.

“It does look a bit like you,” he conceded, enjoying her gasp at what amounted to a dismissal of the fact. The drawing looked more than a ‘bit’ like her, and they both knew it. “But you should not have seen it in the first place. I told you there would be consequences.”

Before she could protest, he slotted the folio back in its place on the shelf and bent over. Lily gasped as she went over his shoulder, her hands landing on his buttocks before she snatched them away with another gasp, as though the touch had burned her.

Nathan turned, giving her a little heft that knocked the air from her lungs as he carried her through the library into the hall. She finally found her voice again, though she used it to whisper furiously rather than shout—quick thinking of her since there was a good chance they’d attract attention from the servants if she yelled.

“Put me down this instant!”

“No.”

The refusal was swift, firm, and he did not bother to add any additional arguments. He had warned her, she had ignored him, and now she was going to pay the price. If the servants saw her being carted off like a sack of potatoes over his shoulders, so be it. It was late enough, most of them should be in the back of the house, where they slept.

“Nathan!” Her voice was a harsh whisper now. “Put me down! I can walk perfectly well on my own!”

He applied a firm, hard slap to her rump, making her gasp and wriggle on his shoulder, necessitating another adjustment that sent the breath puffing from her lungs. Nathan grinned. This was far more fun than it had any right to be.

Who knew marriage to Lillian Davies, now Jones, would be so enjoyable?

He was looking forward to the rest of the night.

First the punishment, then the pleasure.

ChapterThirteen

Lily

It occurred to Lily, as she was carted through the house over her new husband’s shoulder, she may have made a miscalculation. In her efforts to determine where the line was, she did so under the assumption she could predict—to a reasonable degree—Nathan’s reactions. Obviously, that was not the case.

She had expected to be spanked in the library.

An endeavor which still would have carried the possibility of the servants overhearing their activities, but they would be unlikely to interrupt. It would be embarrassing if she ever found out someone had overheard, but she was unlikely to ever know. That was completely different than the risk of being seen as he carried her through the hall over his shoulder!

And swatted her on the way!

The skirts of her dress meant the swat wasn’t painful, but it turned her cheeks brighter red as she desperately tried to look around to see if there were any witnesses to her undignified position. From her limited vantage point, there were none to be seen, but she was well aware that could change at any moment. Something she had not factored in, not realizing Nathan would be so brazen!

Before she started testing where his lines were regarding her behavior and how far he could be pushed, she should have established where his lines were in general.
