“Let me guess,” Grey said, painting on a forced grin. “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Becca put a hand to her chest and smiled widely at him. “A man after my own heart.” She tossed a wink my way. “He’s a keeper, Aves.”

“Good flick,” Grey added, gesturing to the bag Becca was carrying. “What the hell are you bringing in that?”

I thought she just had her larger black purse with her, but I realized now that it was more like a mini duffel bag.

“I had a feeling you three would be lame asses and not bother dressing up for your own Halloween party, so I got you these.”

She dropped the duffel down onto the hood of the Rover, earning herself a little glare from Corvus as she unzipped the bag.

“One for you,” she said, handing one to Grey.

“And you, Rook.”

“And you, too,Bone Man.”

“Becca,” Corvus warned.

“I know, I know. Only in private, oh powerful prince of darkness.”

“What the hell are these?” Rook asked, seemingly annoyed as he stomped out the remnants of his cigarette beneath his boot.

But it was obvious, wasn’t it? The shape gave them away, even in the minimal light pouring onto the front drive.

“Crow masks,” I said, not even realizing I’d said the words aloud.

“Come on,” Becca urged them, planting her hands on her hips. “At least try them on. I had them custom made.”

Corvus’ nostrils flared, and Rook lifted a brow at her.

“She said try them on,” I repeated, adding an edge of violence to my tone that was just enough to spur them to listen.

“Aren’t they great?” Becca squealed as the guys finished tying them on with the oiled black laces.

They covered half their faces from forehead to just below the nose and were both a shining and matte black with an iridescent blue in some parts. The beaks extended out, but not so far out that they appeared bulky or looked foolish. They looked badass. Like, straight out of a horror movie.

“What do you say, boys?” I pressed. “Becca went out of her way to have these made for you…”

Grey cleared his throat. “Thanks, Becca. These are great.” He elbowed Rook.

“Yeah. Whatever. They’re cool.”

“And you’re already used to wearing a mask, so I’m going to assume this suits you just fine, Corv.” Becca patted him on the chest. “Though I like you better in skeleton makeup.”

He growled slightly, and I steered Becca toward the back seat. “Okay. That’s enough. Let’s go.”

We barely got outside of the town limits before Becca pulled a joint from the smaller purse she had hidden in the duffel and lit it up, blowing the smoke out the rear window while she hummed along to Boy Epic pouring out of the speakers.

“Here,” she said, passing it. “You need this more than I do. Loosen up a bit. Tonight’s going to be fun, and it’s my last night at the loft.”

I took the joint with a sigh. “I really wish you’d reconsider staying a bit longer.”

“Why? The window’s fixed back at Briar Hall, and besides, you barely sleep at all with me there.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but she held up a hand, and I took another drag instead.

“I’m not taking any offense,” she said. “So I hope you won’t either when I tell you that when youareactually sleeping, you’re a terrible sleeping buddy.”
