“Sweetheart, if you don’t open the door now so I can see you’re okay with my own eyes, I’m gonna break the damn thing down.” I could tell he meant business. Ever since my seizure at Jurnee’s wedding reception, he seemed to think it was his sworn duty to watch over me.I don’t remember hiring a bodyguard, even if he was built just for the job.

His heavy breathing bled through the door loud and clear. I had one choice and one choice only. So I stood, unlocked the door, and then after turning the knob, I threw it open. It banged against the door stop and came flying back toward me. Gyth threw out his big strong hand and grabbed it just in time to stop the motion before it hit me. I planted my hands on my hips, giving him my best-irritated look and trying to dish out as much attitude as I could.

Usually, I was pretty laid-back.

It was my bestie Alley that carried all the sass, although Jurnee found some recently after she got together with Alley’s brother, Braxton, and came out of her shell. But for me, this was unusual, and it was all because of the man who was taking up my personal space, and who now stood before me, towering over my five-five frame, with his six-two built from granite physique, looking me over from head to toe.

I pulled my hands from my hips, jutted my nose in the air, and with one finger poked his rock-hard pec, trying my best to look him in the eyes with a mad as hell expression.Damnit, my finger burns from his touch.

“Stop the, ‘Me Tarzan, you Jane’ routine. I’m not yours to look after, Gyth.”I am pretty sure his chest is better than Tarzan’s, though.“Why do you have to be such a brute? You’ve seen me, now you can go.”

Oh my God, he had to go, because his intoxicating aroma of musk, mixed with the peppermint from the candies he sucked on all the time, reminding me of the kiss we had just shared, filled my nostrils and had my belly rolling with emotional summersaults. Sometimes I wanted to scream at him, and the next I felt the urge to kiss the ever-lovin’ hell out of him.Especially now that I knew what it felt like to be devoured by Gyth’s tantalizing mouth. I was terrified I’d become addicted—if I haven’t already—because holy crap the man could kiss.

His mouth quirked up in a sexy smirk, like what I said was humorous, then it changed and a serious look took over his strikingly handsome face.

Ugh, this man will drive me to drink, and I can’t even do that anymore because I know it would only add to me feeling worse than I have been already.

“I’m not leaving, Summer, not now, not ever. You and me, we are going to figure out what’s going on,” he stated as his demeanor changed and sweet Gyth took hold. He raised his right hand and gently stroked my face, pushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear. The moment I felt his calloused fingers touch my soft skin, my body jolted, and lust pulsed through my body hot and strong. His eyes dilated from the touch. It was obvious he saw the effect he had on me.

Stepping back a little, to shatter and break the spell he had me under, had his hand dropping from my face, and my back hitting the edge of the sink. The space between us didn’t last as he advanced on me once again.

Stopping right in front of me, his eyes bored into mine. “Sunshine, please…” he started and then paused, taking a deep breath, as if trying to gain control. “Don’t shut me out, we need to figure this out.”

I’d had enough.

All my feelings of fear, worry, unease, and even lust crashed into me at once and I’d lost it.

“Don’t Sunshine please, me!” I shouted. “I know what’s wrong with me, I don’t need someone to tell me, and I don’t want them to.” I was breathing hard as I heard footsteps pounding down the hall and Alley rounded the corner, storming into the bathroom. Her expression was wild, more than pissed, and protective, she was still the mama lion of the bunch even after all these years.

“Gyth, get the fuck out now! She doesn’t need to get worked up, and you of all people know that!” Alley demanded, shouting it in a harsh tone.

The mountain of a man before me didn’t look phased in the slightest, but he was a good guy and respected Alley and women in general. Alley also had a presence about her that demanded respect and she was savage when it came to those she loved and what she believed in.This is just like the first day I met her. Here she is, protecting me again.

Throwing his hands up in a pleading gesture, Gyth replied, “Okay, I’m going, but we will talk later.”

Of course we will. He just will not give up.

As he left the bathroom, reluctantly it seemed, Alley moved in closer and wrapped her arms around me before pulling me in for a hug. She silently held me, but after that show, she wasn’t going to keep letting me hide, just as Gyth wouldn’t. Beyond the point of exhaustion, I cuddled into her and took a deep breath as I thought about the last few months.

Alley had been letting Gyth sniff around whenever he’d wanted, and had even encouraged me to let the man into my world. She insisted he cared about me, but the thing was she didn’t understand how truly different we were.

Or that our two souls were unlikely to mesh.

Chapter Two

Gyth

“Ten, nine, eight, seven…”

I was going out of my fucking mind.

Counting backward from ten, I worked to get my emotions under control.

Anger. Lust. Fear.

And so many more.

It wasn’t too long ago I’d told my best friend Braxton that I was not pursuing Summer. I’d expressed that I didn’t feel that I was good enough for her, and I had to deal with the injury to my leg I sustained during my last mission before I was medically discharged from the Marines. Not only that, but we needed to get our new businessNo Surrenderup and running.
