Way to go, slick.

“Sorry, you're getting soaked, darlin. Let’s get you to my truck and warm you up.”

Pulling away from me, she walked to the nearby garbage can and tossed the rest of her ice cream in, so I followed suit.

“Do you know why I wanted ice cream?”

I have to say I was a bit curious that it had been her request over so many other things and on such a cold day.

“Why?” I answered back.

“Because when I was little, I used to think ice cream would make a bad day better, but no matter how many bad days I had, my parents would never take me. Somehow, I knew if I asked you, that wouldn’t be the case. Thank you.”

Add another checkmark to the list of why I don’t like her parents. But I didn’t have time to dwell on it because all of a sudden, in the middle of the playground Summer started spinning in circles with her arms out and face up toward the sky. Then she stunned me with what she said.

“I may have just been diagnosed with Lupus less than an hour ago, deal with seizures sometimes, and have to take a bunch of meds, but I’m going to be okay.”

She stopped spinning and walked up to me, planting her hands on my chest, she looked into my eyes and spoke again. Her words were music to my ears.

“Because I have the best friends in the world, a great big brother, and I have you.”

Wrapping my arms around her back, I pulled her flush to me and plastered our wet bodies together. “You’re damn right you have me, always will, and don't ever try and get away.”

And then I kissed my girl silly, both of us soaked, and it was fucking one of the greatest times I had ever had in my life.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Summer

Nervous anticipation ran rapidlythrough my body.

I’d been around Gyth a lot. I’d kissed him, accepted his support during important moments of my life, and he’d even spent the night at my home. Oh and don’t forget the fact I’d seen him naked. But knowing this was our first official date, I was still wound up and full of anxious energy as I finished getting ready.

It was like I was one of those Jack-In-The-Box toys, where you crank the handle, turning it over and over, untilbam, the clown explodes out of the box.

Yup, that was me. About to detonate.

But I managed to keep the lid on it long enough to finally get dressed.

Wearing a pair of black jeans, a red and white, checkered flannel shirt, and some black Vans, would not normally be my outfit of choice for a first date, but Gyth had told me to dress casual. And it was only noon, so it wasn’t an evening date, and not knowing what he had planned, I’d done as I was told.

The man was a bossy butt, but also a sexy, kind man too. Gyth was the whole package.

One I desperately wanted to unwrap, even if I didn’t know what the hell I was doing when it came to sex. Though I had a feeling Gyth would gladly show me the ropes.

“Girlfriend, the Ox is here to pick you up!” Alley yelled through the house.

The low rumble of Gyth’s words as he responded to her, even though I couldn’t make out what he was saying, sent shivers down my spine and had my nipples puckering as they came to life. I’d never understood what all the fuss was about when women talked about how their bodies responded to a man because I hadn’t experienced it.

Until I’d met Gyth.

Now I couldn’t calm my reaction to the guy even if I tried. My body had a mind of its own whenever he was around. The only reason I didn’t feel silly was that Gyth’s body stood up and took notice when I was near him too. Some parts more than others, I thought to myself and then laughed.

Grabbing my jacket off my bed where I’d laid it to finish getting ready, I headed out toward my date. As I rounded the corner into the living room, I looked up and straight into Gyth’s eyes, but it was Alley that spoke first.

“Look at you already blushing red before the date even gets started. What dirty thoughts are running through your head?”

I swear the girl had no damn filter.
