Once her water broke and rushed out all over the kitchen floor as they were cleaning up from dinner, the cat was out of the bag, and Braxton went into full panic mode getting Jurnee in the car, along with their daughter Embry.

Listening to a five-year-old tell us about how her mama spilled water everywhere and Daddy was running around all silly with his arms flapping like a bird was just too damn funny and a story that would be told time and time again, I’m sure.

Jurnee was one tough girl and had even called Alley and me herself from the car. Alley then called Jurnee’s parents and her friend Gemma, and I called Kace and my brother Landon.

Everyone seemed to all get to the hospital right behind the Hart family. We all spilled into the lot like a train connected, one boxcar after another.

Sticking to the pact we’d made growing up, where we’d promised to be there for each other during this time, Alley and I were in the room during the birth, along with Braxton, of course, and amazingly, Embry, who was holding up like a champ even with her mother screaming at the top of her lungs.

All the others were currently out in the waiting room because my girl wasn’t wasting any time and this birth seemed to be moving at warp speed.

Braxton was stationed on one side of his wife and Alley on the other, while I had my arms wrapped around Embry’s middle as we stood together. We were positioned back a bit from the bed and up toward Jurnee’s head so as not to have the little girl alarmed at anything she might see when her brother made his debut.

Jurnee and Braxton had gone round and round about whether letting Embry be in the room was a good idea, but at the end of the day, they decided to let her. Embry had begged to be there when her baby, as she called it sometimes, was born. She’d pleaded over and over, eventually wearing her parents down. So we were all here to support them and be there for their special moment.

Another scream broke from Jurnee’s lips and the doctor said, “I see the head.”

Someone seriously should’ve videotaped the birth because the look on Braxton's face at those words was priceless. He snapped out of it really quick though as Jurnee gave another massive push, yelling for the whole hospital to hear.

“Where is his body?” Embry asked me, catching the comment that they only saw the head.

“It’s coming,” I told her, lamely doing a piss poor job at explaining. But I was saved from further explanation when Jurnee yelled out.

“Oh my God, I can’t do it.”

“One more big push and you’re there,” the doctor assured her.

Braxton leaned in and kissed Jurnee’s temple. “Dimples, you’re amazing, you are so strong. I love you. You got this.”

That did it and my friend bore down and gave it all she had.

Then the sweetest sound in the whole world echoed throughout the room. The wail of their son. And boy did that kid already have a healthy set of lungs.

Embry had been worried about her mom, it was evident by the look on her face, but she did fabulous and when she saw the doctor place her brother on her mother’s chest, she and Braxton were at Jurnee’s side. The whole family shed tears of happiness, as Alley backed up to let them have a private moment.

“Mama, you okay?” Embry asked in a tiny voice, as she touched Jurnee’s cheek tenderly.

“I’m fine, Angel,” Jurnee replied to her daughter.

Someday I want this. God, I want it so bad.

I looked over at Alley and salty liquid ran rapidly down her face, as it did mine.

“She did it,” I whispered to Alley.

“Yes she did,” she softly replied, looping her arm through mine and snuggling into my side.

We stood there watching for a few minutes before Jurnee turned to us and said, “What are you waiting for? Get your butts over here.”

Neither Alley nor I hesitated to go to our best friend. This was something we had talked about since we were twelve-years-old. Our friendship was as strong as ever, our love for one another evident. We have been and will always be soul sisters.

Summer

Holding the baby close, I leaned in and breathed in his perfect scent.

The room was packed with family and friends, and I knew I had to share cuddle time. Even if I didn’t want to. Once things settled, everyone descended upon the Hart family like kids hitting the candy aisle at the grocery store, wanting to get a look at the newest member.

And oh my gosh he was the freaking cutest baby ever.
