Taking the sheet from my hands, she glanced down, and her face flamed, turning spitting-mad, red. “Where the hell did you get this?” Jumping up from the couch and turning around to face me, she asked.

“Tell me what it says,” I demanded. “It was on my car window when I left work and I didn’t read it. I just grabbed it and came straight here.”

“Summer—” she started and then paused. Looking like she wanted to do anything but show me the note, she started pacing. “I am going to hurt someone if they think they are going to scare or harm one hair on your head.”

Did she say harm?

“Alley, just give it to me, I will look at it myself.” She didn’t give up the paper, but she sat down beside me then and wrapped one arm around my shoulders. Her free hand flipped open the dreaded note.

Blood turning to ice, I read the few words on the paper out loud.

“You will get what is coming to you.”

Eight words only and no signature, but I knew exactly who had written them. “He is never going to let it go,” I told Alley.

“Honey, it will be okay. Nobody is going to let that asshole hurt you,” Alley stated, setting the paper on the coffee table in front of us and now with both arms pulled me to her and hugged me tight. “Does Gyth know?”

“No,” I mumbled against her shoulder. “I didn’t want him to have to leave work and since I hadn’t read it yet, I didn’t call him.”

She let out a little laugh. “Girl, that man may spank your butt for not calling him right away.”

She was right. Gyth would probably be upset a little, I hadn’t phoned him the second I saw the paper, but he was going to be even more livid when he found out that I had a bad feeling for a week now and hadn’t mentioned it.

“Time to call your man. Do you want to do it or would you like me to?” she asked, unfolding her arms from my body and looking at me.

“I will do it,” I told her, letting out a big sigh. “Then I think we need to splurge for Chinese and watchSixteen Candles. It could totally help my mood.”

“Sounds like a plan. But you know I have to call Jurnee too, right? She will be super upset if she is left in the dark again.” Placing her hand on mine, she added, “And don’t worry, our girl is tough. She can handle knowing what is going on and still mama two beautiful kids.”

“Fine, you call her, and I will call Gyth. Thanks, girlfriend,” I said to Alley as we both rose to get our phones.

“I got your back,” was her reply. Just as she started to walk away, she turned back and asked, “Hey, where is Ash?”

Just my dog’s name brought a smile to my face. She seriously was one of the best things in my world. “Since she was with me at Gyth’s and I had to work early, I left her there today and he was going to bring her home after work. Looks like it may be sooner rather than later, which is okay with me. She comforts me.”

“Gyth’s gift was damn good. The man is a keeper,” she said, smiling.

“That he is.” I wasn’t letting him go. No way, no how.

Yup he was pissed. But once again it wasn’t directed at me.

Gyth also wasn’t the only one in the room fuming mad. Somehow, the house was now full of people. Along with Gyth, who brought Ash with him, Braxton and Kace showed up too. Then my brother Landon appeared minutes after them and Jurnee, along with the two kids in tow. Apparently, everyone wanted to make sure for themselves that I was okay.

Gyth had already made a call to a friend at the police station and they had come by and taken a report, which sounded like a bunch of hogwash and something that would go nowhere, but it was what needed to be done.

So once everything had been handled, mine and Alley’s supper for two, ended up being a full-out dinner party. But I felt a little better, even if Gyth was still tense and seriously ticked off. Which was probably putting it mildly. Maybe it was my turn to make him feel better.

As we cleaned up and leftovers were divided out for people to take home, because let's face it, we bought enough food for an army, I sidled up to Gyth’s side and whispered in his ear. “How about you let me relieve some of that tension for you?” Everyone else had headed home, but Alley was still in the kitchen with us.

“Eww, wait until I am out of earshot for that crap, you two,” she said, pretending to make a gagging noise. “Let me get to my room and make myself scarce, then you kids can have the run of the house,” she added, as she headed out of the kitchen.

With nobody else around except for us and Ash, I grabbed my guy's hand and towed him behind me toward the bathroom. Ash followed but took a turn into my room along the way to curl up on her bed in the corner.

I pushed Gyth inside and shut the door, locking it behind us. Alley had her own bathroom with the master bedroom so she never used this one, but better safe than sorry and have her walk in on us.

Turning to him, I reached for the bottom of his shirt, pulling it from his jeans and up over his head in one swift motion, before tossing it to the ground. Planting my hands on his rock-hard abs, I leaned in close and kissed his pec over his heart.

Covering my hands with his, he looked in my eyes and held my stare. “I won’t let him or anyone else hurt you!” he exclaimed. “That fucker has almost seen his last day and no doctor, not even himself, will save him!” His body locked tight, his temper rising, I kissed his chest again and could instantly feel him start to calm down.
