Screeching around the last corner to her street, I was damn lucky I hadn’t rolled the truck. I pulled into the drive, slammed on the brakes, threw the truck in park, and barreled out. Rounding my vehicle, I raced for the front door, which stood wide open.

My heart almost stopped at the sight.

Hearing the sirens and more vehicles' engines added to the sounds, I knew the guys and police were here, but I didn’t stop for anything. As I rushed in, I heard Alley yelling from the bedroom area. I hadn’t even noticed her car because I had been so hell-bent on getting to Summer.

“Don’t you fucking move or I will hit you again!” Alley screamed.

I flew down the hall, running straight to Summer’s room; the scene before me stole the breath right out of my lungs.

Summer was laying on the floor, with Ash’s head tucked under her neck, padding it from the ground, as she was just starting to come around from what looked like a big seizure, and Alley had Dr. Lawson pinned on the ground, a baseball bat shoved into his back.

Rushing to Summer, I called out to Alley to ask if she was okay and if she had the asshole because I needed to get to my girl.

“I’m fine, help her,” Alley said in a worried but pissed off tone. She was riled up for sure but doing a damn good job of holding it together.

Rushing over and seeing Summer’s top ripped open and her exposed, was not something I was prepared for. It took everything in me to not turn and kill the son of a bitch currently face down on the floor, but Summer needed me.

Pulling my shirt over my head, I got down next to her and slowly picked her up enough to hold her against me before covering her top half with my t-shirt. Ash wasn’t letting her out of her sight and she moved to lay her head on Summer’s leg, letting her know she was still there.

Within a minute, the room was swarming with people. The officers who responded to the scene had run in, Kace and Braxton were there, and a couple of paramedics were right behind them. Not blinking an eye in my direction as the policeman also took in the scene, he relieved Alley of her bat and took over, cuffing Dr. Lawson and hauling him out of the room. When Kace and Braxton looked over, I could see the same murderous look in their eyes as they realized just how far this had gotten.

Alley’s eyes now pooled with tears as she looked down at her best friend. The adrenaline and fight left her body, leaving her vulnerable too, and I so badly wanted to be the one to have gotten to the man who had hurt Summer and put that look on Alley’s face.

Looking back down at Summer, I wondered if my girl, who was my whole world, would be able to bounce back this time.

Chapter Forty-Three

Gyth

I wanted the beautiful, peaceful look on Summer’s face to stay, even when she woke, but I was afraid that wouldn’t happen.

Sitting next to her hospital bed, my body was tense with fury for the man who had put her there, but it was mixed with anger at myself for not being with her and protecting her. I’d told her I wouldn’t let anything happen to her and I’d failed. Just as I had failed my friend Luke, who was now dead. What if things had gone even worse and Summer wasn’t here with me now?

If it hadn’t been for Alley, who would have known how much further the asshole would have taken things. My stomach revolted at the thought that it was probably a lot from the looks of the room when I walked in. What she’d already gone through was despicable, and I wished I could find a way to take it all back so it never happened. But I would be forever grateful for Alley and her timing, as well as her fearlessness.

Walking in and seeing Summer on the floor, exposed and hurt, Ash tucked under her to protect her from harming herself more during the seizure, was surreal. I’d been an idiot to think that the prick would take Landon and my words seriously. And for that, Summer paid the price.

Would she forgive me?

Could I forgive myself?

Ash was amazing and I still couldn’t believe she had somehow figured out what to do. She was not completely trained specifically for someone who suffered from seizures, but when I had seen her, somehow I’d known she was exactly the dog Summer needed.

And then there was Alley. Summer had told me all about the first time she’d met Alley and how she had been watching out for her ever since. Tonight had been no different. Alley wasn’t even supposed to be home yet, but she’d said that she had a feeling that something wasn’t right and so after dinner she’d left instead of hanging around to chit chat.

So, rushing home, she’d walked in and heard Summer scream, then grabbed the bat she always left by the front door. We teased her about that sometimes, just joking around, not thinking she’d ever need to use it. But I don’t think a single one of her friends would say a fucking word about that bat now.

Alley told the cops that she’d rushed down the hall and into Summer’s room right after Ash had jumped on Dr. Lawson, knocking the fucker off Summer, just as she had a seizure, and then the dog immediately went to her master’s side. When the man tried to get up, Alley didn’t hesitate. Taking the bat, she slammed it into his legs, sending him to the floor, where he howled in pain, and then she held him there with the bat shoved in his back, which is when I had got there.

Dr. Lawson would be going to jail and had a guard on him now, but he had some recovering to do first. I knew from personal experience just how long it could take to come back from an injury and Alley had busted one of his knees up pretty damn good. He needed surgery, not that I cared because he would have been a whole lot worse off if I had gotten ahold of him. However, I have no doubt Alley would have done a hell of a lot more if she needed to. When Summer heard the full story, I knew she was going to be damn proud of her friend. I know I was.

But I was also impressed with Summer. It was obvious from the state of the covers, where she was on the floor, that she had put up her own fight. My girl was a survivor. Now she just needed to wake up. When we had come in she’d woken up, but was upset, confused, and distraught, so they gave her something to help her rest.

Everyone had been at the hospital for a while, waiting to make sure Summer was okay but had all gone home to get some rest. Alley had taken Ash with her and had gone to Braxton and Jurnee’s. Alley needed them, but Jurnee needed Alley with her too. Jurnee had been pretty emotional about what happened to Summer and Alley being involved, and her not being there to help them both. It took Braxton some time to calm her down. Hopefully, everyone would be on the mend soon.

Including Landon, who I believed was feeling a lot like me at that moment, thinking he should have stopped this from happening to his sister. And when he found out Alley had been in harm's way too, well let’s just say that between the two, the man came unglued.

After statements were given, Summer’s pending for when she woke up, I hadn’t been charged with trying to elude an officer. Likewise, Alley wouldn’t be charged for hurting the fucking creep that broke into their home and sexually assaulted Summer, with the clear attempt on most likely raping her, and Dr. Lawson would finally be behind bars. Which still wasn’t enough and I wanted to rectify that, but I needed to be present for the future with my lady.
