If she will still have me. God I hope so.

I had been going over everything in my head while I held Summer’s hand, my head back, resting against the chair I was sitting in, and I must have fallen asleep because I was caught in a nightmare.

I hadn’t had one in some time, but the events of the evening must have triggered it. It had started the same as it always did, flashing back to the day I’d lost Luke, but it ended a lot differently because when I looked down at the very end before he died, it wasn’t him I saw.

It was Summer.

Summer

I might have been groggy, but I remembered that moan of heart-wrenching agony.

Working against a scratchy throat and trying to get enough strength, I squeezed Gyth’s hand that held mine, as I tried calling out his name, but it didn’t work. Pushing past the fogginess, I attempted to do it once more with a little more force.

Stormy grey-blue eyes blinked open staring at me for a moment as if they had seen a ghost. I loved the color but also hated that they changed to a grey tone because that always signified he was upset. Gyth’s beautiful lashes fluttered several times as he lifted his head from my bedside, the blue in his orbs intensifying as everything started coming back to him. Then standing, he leaned over and planted a warm kiss on my lips.

“I am glad you're here,” he said. Confusion fluttered through my mind trying to understand why he would say such a thing.

“You are glad I am in the hospital?” I asked as I looked around the room taking in my surroundings.

He frowned, “Of course I am not happy you're in the hospital, but it’s just…” His voice trailed off as though he didn’t want to reveal whatever else he was thinking, but I wanted to know.

“Tell me the rest, why did you stop?” My guy looked conflicted, worried, and upset. Giving his hand another squeeze as I had done before, I coaxed him to finish his thoughts. “Come on babe, tell me the rest. I assume it was a nightmare. I know that you haven’t been having them since we spend almost every night together lately.”

Letting out a big sigh, he began rubbing his big strong thumb back and forth across the top of my hand and then spoke.

“My dream started out about Luke. It was just like I told you about before, but when the end came...” He stopped again, taking in a deep breath and exhaling, a scared look etched on his face. “In the end, it wasn’t Luke in my lap, dying... it was you.”

Oh man, I didn’t love the sound of that and I hated even more that he’d dreamt it.

“Come lay next to me,” I told him, releasing his hand and patting the bed, as I tried scooting over.

That got a smile out of him. “Sunshine, I can’t fit in that bed.”

“Well, you are going to have to make it work because I need you next to me.”

His face softened and he slipped off his shoes, then very carefully, managed to squeeze in beside me, turning on his side and facing me, like we had laid so many other times together when we wanted to see each other and talk. Which was perfect because I had something to say.

“Honey, I am right here and I am not going anywhere. Yes, I am remembering everything that happened before the seizure, but I don’t want to talk about it yet. What I do want to say is that I am with you, and I love you. Just stand by me and we will be okay.”

I had told myself when the asshole was trying to rob me of something I was not willing to give, that I had Gyth, my brother, and friends to live for, and I was here. I was alive and I would find a way to get through it all because I had them.

“You are the most amazing woman I know,” he whispered to me, running his hand up and down my side. “Damn beautiful too,” he added.

I didn’t think I was probably looking so great right about now, but if he thought I was beautiful, I’d take it. “Do you think I should take home this hospital gown and wear it for sexy time because it is such a turn-on for you?” I don’t know why I was teasing him so much right now, but it was helping me not think of the other shit hanging there at the back of my mind, just waiting to take over.

The look on Gyth’s face said he knew exactly what I was doing and he could read the emotions laying at the surface, but played along. “You are sexy in anything, so you want those beauties, you bring them with you. I will take you any way you want to give yourself to me.”

Giving him a little smile, I then asked the couple things I needed to know, so I was prepared and could start to process and heal. “Did he…” that was all I got out before Gyth started shaking his head no. I am not sure either of us wanted to have that sentence finished.

“No, he didn’t get that far.” And with that answer, I felt some of my body relax.

“But how did he stop?” I remembered the feral look on Dr. Lawson’s face and I knew that there was no stopping him if he got the chance to finish what he started.

“Alley.” At first, that was all he said. Then the biggest grin spread across his handsome face.

I must have looked confused, so he carried on.

“Ash knocked him over and when you began seizing, Alley had just got home and heard you yell right before you blacked out. She took a bat to the fucker’s knees, busting one up good, and held him there, which is about when I, the cops, and the guys came into the room.
