Not one to play games, I laid it out right then.

“It is not a rumor, I am very much married to her and plan to stay that way,” I told him with a smile on my face. Because let’s face it, Alley made me smile all the time.

Hearing the gasp my mother let out, I turned toward her and took her in. Her hand had gone to her chest dramatically and I almost laughed at her antics. Maybe she should be an actress? The woman could win an Emmy award with her performances.

At the sound of my father's voice again, I turned back to him. “You better have done no such thing and if you did, we demand that you get this issue taken care of. We will not let you drag our good family name through the mud by marrying the likes of that Hart girl,” he stated in a demanding voice.

My father had been in the courtroom far too long and that shit may work on those he was cross-examining, but I too had been a lawyer for a while now and his demands or tone didn’t faze me.

“As I said, I will be staying married to Alley. That is her name so use it. And I suggest you be very careful about how you talk about my wife!” I shouted. I was pissed off and about done with the conversation even though it had just gotten started.

“If you choose this path with that girl, you will be cut off. Do you understand?” My father was pissed, same as me, that was clear, but he still held his temper in check at the same time. I couldn’t deny he was a great lawyer, but he wasn’t the type of lawyer or the kind of man I wanted to be.

I backed toward the door because I was done with them, but I had a few last parting words. I’d found it astonishing that my mother was allowing me to say a word or letting my father handle this since it was usually her that did all the talking.

“To be clear, I don’t need your money or your help,” I started before taking a deep breath to control the anger racing through me. “I have my own life, and I plan to live it exactly how I want to. Doing what makes me and my wife happy. I think that I have done what you wished long enough, and I won’t be coming back to the firm, that is final.”

I didn’t get out the rest of what I wanted to say because my mother chose that moment to cut in and finally make her voice heard.

“How dare you speak to us this way. You are where you are at because ofus, and we taught you to be respectful. If you think—”

It was my turn to butt in. “I am done here. This was a waste of my time because you two never listen and until that day comes, you change, and you decide to be decent people you won’t be seeing or hearing from me. I can’t speak for Summer, but I am pretty damn sure she feels the same way.” I was breathing rapidly after my rant.

I started out of the room but left one more parting shot. “One day there may be grandchildren and it is a damn shame you will never know them.” And with that I walked out.

Making it to the front door, I took one last look around the big foyer and home I grew up in. It may have been a nice house, but it was never a home. Opening the door, I left without another backward glance.

There was more to do before I could get home to my wife.

I foundAlley in her office.

Unlike other times where I stood and watched her work, I walked right in and straight to her, pulling her from her chair and into my arms. I’d been dying to get home to her and couldn’t wait another minute to just hold her.

My face was snuggled into the side of her neck, and I breathed in her seductive scent. I knew she didn’t wear some special perfume but used her favorite soap she bought that had a mix of Rose, Violet with hints of Grapefruit and Musk. One thing my girl loved was her sexy undies and soap from Victoria’s Secret. Two things I had bought her many times.

“Are you sniffing me?” she mumbled as she snuggled even closer into my chest.

She knew how much her scent drove me crazy. I knew she had never changed it because whenever the group got together, I would get a whiff of her and the memories of us would seep into my soul.

“You bet I am. Love your scent, baby,” I said softly.

“Want to show me how much?” she asked in a husky tone.

Damn, I had wanted to take her up on that, but we needed to talk first. I hoped that what I had to say didn’t change her mood because after today I needed to be close to my woman. “We need to talk first.”

Those words seemed to pour cold water on the mood and she pulled back, staring up at me with a concerned and worried look, her body tensing up. I reached up and brushed my hand down her cheek softly. I hated to see that expression on her face and tried to quickly change that.

“Hey, everything is okay. There is nothing to worry about.” I slid my hand down her side and grasped her hand in mine. “Let’s sit so I can tell you about my day.”

She still looked worried but seemed to relax a little. I pulled her with me out of the office and toward the front room so we could sit on the couch. Once we got there, I pulled her down with me and right into my lap, turning her toward me just a bit so I was able to see her face.

“I went to see my parents today as you know.” I’d told Alley what my mother had said on the phone, I hadn’t kept that from her before I left. And I knew this morning that she struggled with me going. But it was done.

Her body went stiff again and so I raised my hand that was behind her and placed it into her hair. I softly stroked her silky strands. It was something that always calmed her, and once again, it had worked. She practically melted at the touch and let out a small sigh.

“Baby, listen to me,” I started as I continued to run my fingers through her long locks.
