"Of course not," he said, looking affronted.

Alethia allowed herself to relax, just a little. "So what are you doing in my bedroom then?"

"I am your demon protector. You summoned me, and I told you this last night."

Yeah, she remembered that. She'd kind of hoped it was a dream, though.

"So the horns and the wings are all real, then?"

They looked real. All of him looked pretty damn real, even if he did belong on a book cover more than her parents' bedroom.

"Of course I am real, woman! Would I be standing here, in your bedchamber, waiting to discuss an important matter with you, if I was not real?" he growled.

Oh hell. When he growled in That Voice...now she understood how it was possible for underwear to melt. Or dissolve. Or spontaneously combust...

She shook her head to clear it. Of course. He'd woken her up because he needed to speak to her, hadn't he? She'd had her questions answered, but he was still waiting. Demons weren't known for their patience.

"Okay, so how about you take a seat, and we can talk about whatever it was that was so urgent, you needed to wake me up for it," Alethea said.

"I prefer to stand."

Actually, he seemed to prefer to pace the length of the room, his tail swishing behind him, like some sort of caged beast, or maybe just the Bell House cat, but Alethia just nodded.

Finally, he planted himself directly in front of her, his piercing stare capturing her gaze. "Why did you kill me, Carline?"
