EIGHT

Alethia couldn't remember doing this much preparation for a date since the Year 12 ball, and she hadn't even had a date for that one.

Then again, she hadn't had to consider having sex with anyone after the ball, while tonight, if he was even halfway decent, she would seriously consider it. So she'd gone out and bought new matching lacy lingerie, but she'd hidden it under a demure knee length dress and stockings. While she'd been in the adult shop buying the stockings (because sex shops sold the best stockings, she'd learned from a friend who did competitive dancing), she'd also splashed out on a box of the really good condoms, as well as a novelty one to give to Octavia on her birthday, because that's what you gave Octavia for her birthday. She couldn't remember how long ago the tradition started, but what mattered was that she kept it going, so she did.

While she was paying for her purchases, the girl behind the counter asked, "Have you seen our new vibrators? It's the top selling model in the US market and it comes in five colours." She waved her hand across the display of deluxe dick-shaped devices, wiggling her fingers like she was working magic.

Alethea considered them. The devices were probably better than most men, and likely the yardstick Callie would compare a real man to, in order to determine whether he gave good dick. Hell, if she didn't get lucky on this date, with even passable dick or whatever other part of his body he knew how to pleasure her with, she'd probably need one of these.

But she didn't want a machine. She wanted a man. That's why she'd made this crazy new year's resolution in the first place, and being stuck at home alone in her parents' place during a pandemic had just made her realise how much she wanted to connect with someone. Mentally as well as physically. More than anything, Alethia didn't want to be alone any more.

But if she bought one now, that would be admitting defeat, before she'd even gone into battle. Well, it was love, not war, but surely the principles were the same.

"No, thank you," Alethea said firmly.

"Are you sure? I only unpacked them this morning, and they're whizzing out the door like you wouldn't believe. We'll probably be sold out by Monday, and who knows when the next shipment will arrive, what with all the passenger planes grounded and all." She winked. "I promise you'll regret it if you don't get one now."

Maybe, but she'd lived twenty-four years without owning a vibrator, and none of her cousins had one. Hell, no one she knew owned one, even if they did appear in books a lot. Maybe it was an American thing, because American guys didn't know how to do it, so girls over there had to take matters into their own hands.

Aussie girls were different, and, hopefully, at least one Aussie guy would be, too.

She finished her outfit off with a pair of ankle boots with high heels. Just in case he was tall, so it'd be easier for him to kiss her. Or for her to kiss him...

Now, the important decision: should she wear her hair up or down? She'd had it up in her profile picture, and she usually braided it back for work, but guys liked long hair and hers was nearly down to her waist. Of course, being braided all day, it would be wavy if she didn't take a straightener to it, which would take at least an hour, maybe two, which she didn't really have time for right now. So she brushed it back into a high ponytail, and hoped that would be enough.

If it wasn't...maybe there'd still be a vibrator left for her to buy on Monday.
