“Yes, but please stay by your phone. We might need to call you with more questions for the investigation.”

Investigation. The police never fucking involved themselves in our business, yet they were opening an investigation into Dante’s little killing spree for revenge. It didn’t make sense. Sal should have taken care of the police before he’d died. There shouldn’t be any investigation. But I would deal with that later.

Right now, I needed to find Dante. And fast. I didn’t know if the Snake could find them if they were out in the city, but I didn’t want to take any chances. But I also needed to make sure my own family was alright. Mateo answering my phone call was a good sign, but I hadn’t asked if they’d had any trouble. Still, I would have assumed that would have been the first thing he’d say to me when picking up.

I still called my mother anyway. I just needed to hear her voice. To make sure she was still alive. She answered after the fourth ring, sounding sleepy. “Sienna? Is everything alright?”

“Yeah,” I said, shaky. I bit back a sob. I could have died tonight. I could have disappeared without ever hearing my mother’s voice ever again. The thought shakes me to the core. “Everything is fine. Are you alright?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

Relief flooded through me. “No reason. I’ve got to go. I love you.”

“I love you too, dear.”

Hanging up, I got back into my car, backing away from the flashing lights and police with their investigations. I had no idea where Dante and Killian could be. Hell, they could be anywhere in this city, and I might never find them. I knew they’d need to go somewhere safe, but I wasn’t sure where that would be. It could have been anywhere. Dante and his family could even have their own safe houses throughout the city or even outside of it. And I would have no idea where those would be.

Just as I pulled out onto the highway to head back into the city, my phone vibrates with a text. I glance down at it quickly, and my heart leaped to my throat at the sight of Dante’s name.

Dante: Meet me at the docks. Hurry

I don’t have time to think it over or why Dante didn’t just call me to make sure I was safe. Maybe he was still hurt from what I’d said to him before, or maybe he just thought I didn’t want to hear from him. I took the exit ramp, heading towards the shipyard. It made sense that he would head here. This was just another safe place for him.

Parking, I cut the engine. There were no lights here, no signs of any movement whatsoever, which didn’t surprise me. If Vincent was working for the Snake, then others could be too. It explained why I hadn’t seen a damn soul here the last time I’d come when I’d found the USB. The Snake had more power than we ever realized.

Even if I was just meeting Dante and Killian, I still reloaded my gun, using the bullets from the box in my glove compartment. No one was going to take me by surprise again. I left my purse in the car, holding the gun tightly between both hands. My boots clicked against the cement lot, making more noise than I would have liked. From here on out, I was wearing fucking sneakers.

Dante had just texted me to meet him at the docks, but he hadn’t said where exactly. My eyes scanned the shipyard, noticing just how big it was for the first time. It would take me ages to find them here, and I’d left my cell phone in the damn car. Sighing, I hoped Dante would be on the look out for me and find me soon.

I walked between the shipping containers, lifting my gun before going around any corner. Just because this was our land, our business, didn’t mean there couldn’t be traitors here as well. Vincent had been a surprise, but now I’ve learned to know better. I couldn’t trust anyone here. If there was anyone here at all.

After walking nearly half the docks, I started to worry that Dante wasn’t here at all. I hadn’t heard anything but the gentle lapping of the river, the metal clanking of the ships harbored here. The sounds of the city were faint, cars honking, sirens blaring in the distance.

After a few more minutes without finding anyone, I drop my weapon and head back towards the parking lot. I would try to call Dante to see where he was. That was a lot safer than stalking the shipyard at night on my own.

Before reaching the parking lot, I felt hands grab me from behind. They knocked the gun from my grasp, kicking it across the sidewalk. I struggled, trying to see who my attacker was. And then I felt the jab of a needle in my neck, a short prick that sent fear hurdling down my spine. I gasped, still trying to get free. But they were too strong, and the drug that had been in the needle was working too fast.

It didn’t take long before I fell into nothingness.

TWENTY-NINE

DANTE

We drove straight to Sienna’s family’s apartment as soon as we left our house. Killian sat in the seat next to me, paler than a ghost and looking as if he’d actually seen one. It wasn’t the fact that he saw death tonight. He’d seen plenty of that in our world. It was the fact that he’d watched our father die right in front of us. Held him in his arms. That was something neither of us thought we’d see in real life.

“Kill?” He didn’t respond at first. “Killian?”

Killian finally turned to look at me, death in his eyes. “What?”

“I can drop you off somewhere if you need me to.”

“I’m fine,” he replied darkly. “Just keep driving. We need to find Sienna.”

I grunted. “I didn’t know you cared for her so much.”

“I don’t. But you do.” Glancing over at him, I found Killian watching me closely. “I know you said she wanted to kill you, Dante, but I don’t think that’s true either. No one could go through what you two have in such a short amount of time together and not care for the other. I might not know much about relationships, but I do know that, at least.”

I didn’t know what to say at first. “Thank you.”
